If you are fond of dogs and you would like to engage in a professional job that deals with them, you are suitable to train working dogs. Venturing into a career of dog training is very appropriate for you, when you're passionate about teaching canines different tricks or tasks. Dealing with working dogs requires different levels of education and skills on the part of the trainer. On the other hand, there are some trainers that are not required much experience. Though you may not possess much knowledge regarding dog training, your love and care for dogs already count much.

There are several careers that are related with working dogs and training them. These include being a dog handler, a dog trainer, or a dog groomer. Each of these jobs requires certain skills. But the most important reminder of all is that you are passionate with what you are doing. If you don't have a natural closeness with canines, it will be hard for you to carry out your work. In order for you to know which career is suitable for you, you've to assess your capabilities. You also need to comprehend the stipulations and chores of the job.

Dog handlers are usually delegated to take the dog owner’s place during dog competitions or dog shows. There are times, when you've to travel with ten to twelve canines of similar breed. You enter them into shows or competitions. You are paid by the owner of the working dogs. If ever the dog you are handling wins a cash award, it is possible for you to get a bonus. When you are a handler of working or show dogs, you take care of several things. These are the show contracts, dog grooming and care, and training.

When you are a dog trainer, you're assigned to educate dogs. You may also be tasked to teach the owners of the dogs, regarding the proper way to handle their pets. There are trainers that concentrate in the behavior of dogs. There are also some that teach working dogs how to herd, compete, hunt, or carry out special services. Most dog trainers run dog kennels, which are the same with classrooms. If you are managing a dog kennel, you can promote it online. This is possible through workingdogvids.com, which is a website that offers working dog videos. You can upload videos, which show how you train working dogs.

While there are dog trainers and dog handlers; there are also dog groomers. When you're a dog groomer, you're responsible for keeping working dogs and other canines in perfect shape and properly groomed. This goes especially for dogs that are entered in competitions or shows. If you want to specialize in the health and medical needs of the dogs, you can work as a veterinarian. You have to get a degree before you can become a veterinarian. Other careers that are related with dog training are dog walkers, animal behaviorist, judges of dog shows, and personnel of boarding kennel.

If you're just starting out with your job and you want to learn how to carry out your tasks, you can learn by watching working dog videos. You can find these on Working Dog Videos. This is a website that's appropriate for both trainers and owners. Aside from viewing videos, you can also upload or share working dog videos.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a lesser known breed with many one-of-a-kind and appealing qualities. They're a highly energetic breed with a long history as a working dog. The Portuguese Water Dog is believed to descend from the same original dogs as the Poodle, the Kerry Blue Terrier, and the Irish Water Spaniel. The first reference to a water dog similar in type and function as the Portuguese water dog is in text by a monk in 1297, when a dog in a trim similar to the lion cut seen in the current day show ring on Portuguese Water Dogs and Poodles assisted a drowning sailor to shore.

That the first reference to a Portuguese Water Dog or their immediate ancestors includes a water rescue wouldn't be a surprise to fans of the breed. When he was the companion of Portuguese fisherman, the dogs actually herded fish into the nets, retrieved lost equipment including damaged nets, and acted as messenger dogs between boat. Their work ethic and value as a partner to Portuguese fisherman made the Portuguese Water Dog and inseparable part of the fishing culture along the coasts of Portugal.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a moderate sized dog, with males averaging a height of 20-22 inches at the shoulder, females 17-22 inches. Females weigh from 35-50 pounds, while males may be up to 60 pounds. They're slightly rectangular, a little longer in body than they're tall, and of a moderate build that provides the strength for work without being coarse or too refined. Overall, they are blocky from head to tail their head is noted for breadth, and is like an assembly of squares and rectangles.

Perhaps one of the distinctions of the Portuguese Water Dog and the root of some of their popularity is that they're a single coated dogs. Considered by dog fanciers to be “hypoallergenic” in the same manner as Poodles and Bichon Frises because their minimal shedding makes them a dog that many allergy suffers can tolerate. This does vary by individual, but the reduced shedding and water dog tendency not to have dry/flaky skin if fed a proper diet, reduces their allergen production.

The Portuguese Water Dog is still a dog maintaining a working temperament. They're not a dog that does well if left alone all day in the house or in a kennel. The Portuguese Water Dog requires sufficient exercise, training, and a “job” whether that be formal obedience and agility work or some aspect of your life that they are allowed to aid with daily. They do best when they can be a Velcro-dog attached most days to one or more of their family members. They generally do well with children if socialized with them early-on, and do require a significant commitment to socialize in various situations as puppies to develop into the most stable dog possible.

Most owners note that you must have a sense of humor to live with a Portuguese Water Dog, as they most certainly do. As with many intelligent working breeds, the Portuguese Water Dog requires a certain investment of yourself to keep, but they return that investment many times over with their joyous company.

Dog training classes can be great fun for the owner and are essential to help socialize your dog.

I would always advise you to go nd watch a lesson first to make sure you like the trainers methods. Don't take your dog with you at this stage.

If you decide to join the group your dog will go into the lowest class for the first week while the trainer assesses your dogs training level.

Most classes start off with heel work, where you will all walk as a group. The trainer will call out commands, such as ‘turn left’. The heel work grants your dog to settle down and get ready to work without being detracted by the their dogs.

You will then move on to some recalls or down-stays. Depending on your dogs level of training, this may be on or off the lead.

As your dog progresses through the classes, you will probably move on to working your dog off the lead.

Most basic training courses run for twelve weeks, it is then up to you if you want to take your training further.

Some training centers get booked up so you might need to put your name on a waiting list.

All training centers require you to pick up your own dog mess so it is advisable to walk the dog before the class.

If you want to o agility with your dog you usually have t have completed the basic training course first.

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3451/3210608819_6caea427bd_m.jpg" alt="Choose Me Mr. President...Portuguese Water Dog"">

Portuguese Water Dogs have short hair that does not shed and is considered a working dog, meaning that it is a breed that needs to stay busy. This breed is considered a hypoallergenic dog. Traditionally used to assist in fishing expeditions, the Portuguese Water Dog is now kept as a house pet. While this breed isn't as common as other breeds, if you want to dog that's hypoallergenic, lively, and enjoys companionship, then this breed may be the one for you.

Since the Portuguese Water Dog isn't bred as often as other breeds of hypoallergenic dog, you will have to search for a breeder online, in the newspaper, or by calling breeders in your area until you find one. Generally happy dogs, the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with and you may want to consider crate training when you're not at home. This means that the dog will stay in a crate when you go out so it does not destroy your home. When the PWD gets bored or lonely, it will chew on anything it finds.

Crate training should begin right after you bring the dog home. By placing a blanket, toys and water into the crate, you'll make the dog comfortable while you're away. You should not use the crate when punishing the dog or it will not want to go in it when you leave for the day. After training the dog, you'll have to keep up the routine. This will give the dog structure and will also salvage your possessions. Keeping the dog in a crate when you are not at home will also reduce allergens.

Portuguese Water Dogs need to be groomed every two months or so. There are two patterns that most groomers follow, the retriever cut and the lion cut. The retriever cut means that the hair is cut evenly on the body. The lion cut leaves that front half of the dog’s body covered with hair, while hair on the hind legs is cut short. You should take the dog to have his hair groomed if you're not comfortable slicing it yourself.

If you're considering buying a PWD, you should be prepared to have constant companionship. These breeds need to be walked and they need to be entertained throughout the day. If you need to travel on vacation or for work, you should board the dog so it will not be lonely. Portuguese Water Dogs typically live between twelve and fifteen years.

Portuguese Water Dogs are easy going and get along with children and most adults. If you are looking for a breed that does not shed and will fit in with your family, then the PWD is the breed for you. While most Portuguese Water Dogs are black, some are white or a mix of both. Their hair is curly or wavy and similar to that of the standard poodle.
