Training Your PWD Puppy

Portuguese Water Dogs might be trained but you have got to be quick considering with this breed. Porties are very clever. As a puppy my dog Goji was responsive to dog treats, so you could reward him with food if he did a thing on command. This breed is too clever for that human trick to last for long. Here’s what I did to start off coaching my standard PWD:

It can be a incredibly good conditioning for him. I took mine for the Marin Humane Society. Truly the course is best for exercise the owner. I needed some catching up inside the latest education techniques for dogs. Today you do not punish the pet if he does something bad, but only reward him for doing anything excellent. That reward is usually a treat. That is what the class taught me. Socialization is what the course taught Goji, though he was well socialized at his breeder, Toraq. I learned to unlearn the exercise methods I did with my black labrador retriever in an earlier incarnation. I was told to not negatively discipline my doggie. It was hard for me to instruct my associates not to discipline him when the mouthy puppy jumped on them and nipped their skin. I asked my family and friends for being assertive and to knee the k9 if he would jump up. It really is essential that the k9 know who is in charge appropriate from the begin.

A month or so later he went into the Family members Dog I class at the same also inside Humane Society. This taught him some commands and obedience, and that continued using the Spouse and children Dog II course. I do not believe he definitely learned as well quite a few commands there, but we did study to get along greater together, which was excellent.portuguese drinking water doggy Goji

The Portuguese Drinking water K9 is in reality extra inclinedto enjoypraise a lot more than a treat, as an adult. My dog is fairly picky about treats now; when we go into a pet store along with the shopkeepers provide him a deal with, he regularly refuses it. Porties are quite distinct about their food, unlike other breeds. Here’s what he like currently:

  • Dried liver such as liver biscuit
  • Dried salmon sticks
  • Charlie Bear treats
  • Bil-jack biscuits
  • Fois Grois and Caviar
  • Red Barn rolled beef hide with chicken inside
  • Dried Kangaroo meat
  • Dried salmon tenders

Girls train these dogs greater than males, in my opinion. The porties are extra responsive to their high pitched voices than men’s. I also believe Portie’s choose the smell of females over adult males. But this doesn’t mean that they do not highly respect male masters; they do. They require the master to have a total life. In truth, they’ve to possess a operating “captain within the ship” and also you learn that really quick when you have one of these dogs residing with you.

Just one issue that the Portuguese Drinking water K9 will not seem to own to learn is devotion towards the master. We rapidly realized that it’s as if he thinks he is living with a fisherman, and he’s on a boat with the fisherman and becomes extremely devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion isn’t genuinely to some operating fisherman, but to some master. This has been built into Goji because he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems to become only improving around the years. If you can’t handle this extreme devotion don’t bring a PWD residence.

  • You should be consistent in your approach towards your dog
  • Keep intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction and praise consistent; then you’ll be help him understand commands by associating wtih the way it is said.
  • If you issue conflicting commands your dog will be confused compared to one who has learned the same command over and over. One example of being consistent is to let him out the same door every time he has to do his business. In this way he associates that door with needing to go out and will let you know by going to that door instead of somewhere inside house.
  • Remember of course that after every command that he successfully does, shower him with love and affection. Handle him once in a while when he does suitable because like a child it needs for being appreciated and given praise.
  • There are numerous technques to dog education from positive reinforcement, understanding when to reward and when to punish, the effective way of punishing, howTo halt excessive barking and chewing and aggression to name a few.
  • K9 education is an on-going process but a single that may be full of rewards. You will create a bond with your pet that is certainly unbreakable. You will possess a loyal companion for life and a friend forever.
  • There are numerous dog coaching ebooks, cd`s, dvd`s, seminars, groups and tips on coaching your dog that you can find online. Find one that you’re comfortable with and provides all the necessary tools to help you in pet coaching.

Is The Portuguese Water Dog Right For My Family?

The best family for a PWD is an active, outdoorsy one with older children. Porties make exceptional gun dogs when properly trained, and are eager to go camping, hiking, fishing, or swimming with their families. A well-raised Portie is devoted to his family, gets along with other pets, and is polite to strangers (although he’s willing to take action if he feels it’s necessary).

Although their weatherproof coats protect them from the elements, Porties should live indoors with their families. They may become bored when left alone for long periods of time; if the family is out of the house during the day they may come home to inventive destructiveness. Porties have a strong chewing instinct, and need to be trained to know what they are allowed chew on and what they aren’t.
A medium-size house and yard are best, but they’ll get along fine in a smaller home or an apartment if they get at least one long, brisk, daily walk to satisfy their instinctual need to roam, and to work of excess energy. When they get sufficient exercise Porties are fairly calm and contented indoors.

Cocoa Happy in Singapore

Our pwd Goji’s best dog friend was Cocoa, the first portuguese water dog I’ve known.  Cocoa migrated to Singapore in October. We were worried about the long trip and quarantine, but Cocoa made it just fine and handled the ten day quarantine easily. Now Cocoa is enjoying his family in Singapore. Portuguese Water Dogs are very adaptable. We recently moved from our hourse of 30 years to a smaller place nearby, and Goji handled it well. He’s adjusting to not being by the San Francisco Bay all the time. Fortunately, the Bay is not too long a drive from his house.

How Much does a Portugese Water Dog Cost?

A Portuguese Water Dog Puppy that’s a Pet used to price $1800. With the Obama’s dog Bo coming to the White House we’ve not seen any for sale at less than $2900. We anticipate that the price will go to $3500 and even $10,000 . Breeders of this dog are most choosey of who they sell to. The breeding is a complicated science.

Show quality dogs should be $5000 to $14000.  If it is a “champion” the price could be over $25,000.

The maintenance of this breed is a considerable cost. They must be groomed as puppies every 4 weeks, and as adults every 7 weeks.  This costs $89 up per visit.

They require high protein food such as frozen raw meat patties. My dog does not respond to treatstrained with treats], in fact I have not met any PWD’s that are food crazy. But that just means you needsuperior food. I recently gave Goji a can of Evanger’s dog food. It is high quality, human grade meat, and it’s even Kosher? Yet Goji rejected it, I don’t know what he was thinking. Yes he cares about dried Kangaroo meat. Now that is expensive food, about $35/pound. He also likes dried bison.

A trip to PetSmart can easily cost $100. I listed a average shopping trip for Portugese Water Dog in another post. They don’t like regular tennis balls much, they like fancy multi colored PetSmart tennis balls (recommended). They like high quality treats such as dried liver wrapped in bacon, “blue” biscuits, and anything liver. If you feed them too much protein they get very high energywild|hyperactive], if tooTiny they get obviously too sleepy, 20% protein content is best.

Since this breed is designed to be a part of the crew of a fishing boat, he needs constant human companionship. As such, it isn’t good to leave him for more than 3 or 4 hours. And that doesn’t mean somebody can show up for ten minutes and leave, it means they must be around humans pretty much all the time. Also, they want to be around other dogs, and preferably other PWD’s. So what does this mean about cost? It means  play-dates with other Portugus Water Dogs, and lacking that constant trips to dog parks, walks, runs, outings, adventures, play, swimming, fetching, fighting, and mouthing. The cost part comes in Doggie Day Care. They play so hard at Day Care that the bonus is he’s tired at night, and slower the next day. Figure $20 to $28/day.

Goji has been very healthy, but the vet maintenance should cost at least $300/year.

Here’s an update. We have recently learnged that a trained portuguese water dog, chocolate brown, sold for $7000. This was not a puppy but an adult male. 12-10-2009

Different Looks For Portuguese Water Dogs

In recent years, PWD enthusiasts have been able to come up with many versatile looks for their portuguese water dogs. Sometimes, it’s even hard to imaginethat it is essentially the same dog. In the show ring, not a few observers have mistaken a Portie for a poodle!

portuguese water dog

When it comes to coat type, there are two acceptable kinds. The wavy coat is stated to be more in keeping with tradition, but this does not make any less acceptable the second type, which is the curly coat. Curly coats are maintained to be shorter than the wavy type. But fussing over a PWD coat for show will lead nowhere since its coat importance is rated at 5%, while that of the poodle is 60%. True appreciation of the Portie begins by acknowledging it as of the working breed, and not for glamor.

More interaction with Portuguese water dogs will lead to the observation of coat variations, like very tight curls to almost straight. Blow-dried hair that is straight looks artificial, so the coat needs to be presented in a natural wave.

Let’s have one interesting trivia before we turn to coat color. Imagine meeting a Portie with a curly head but a wavy front (sometimes it takes a few years for the definitive coat type to show). So, will it turn outtotally wavy, or curly (never both)? The key to deciding which coat type the dog is, is to look at the lustre of the coat. Curly coats will not shine, while wavy coats do.

The only allowable PWD colours of the coat are: all-black, black and white, brown, brown and white, and all-white. The dogs with white markings are consistent with the “Irish Markings” concept, which is the same genetic pattern with which boxers, for example, are colored. Thus the Portie can also be capable of dramatic looks, despite having working (and not show) roots.

Variations from the preceding guidelines are found in the US, with ticking being seen in a small number of dogs. Even “parti-colours” make it to shows, too. While this scheme is a no-no in most parts of the world for the show ring, there is no way To stopdog owners from wanting a harlequin-like PWD the moment they see one.

The fading gene has been observed as prevalent among brown Portuguese water dogs. The puppies most of the time come out bearing a rich brown color, only to fade out to being an ordinary light brown, orblended brown color as they approach their second year.

One downside to browns with this tendency is that when they’re bred to blacks, the fading gene surfaces among the black offspring. Some breeders try to maximize the opportunity by claiming a “silver” color, when the fact is that the dog is a faded black. Brown dogs also tend to carry a lighter eye, which can then replicate itself when bred to black dogs providing puppies with a yellowish eye tinge.
