DOG TRAINING: Train the owner & the dog.

It is imperative that the owner or a dog be trained at the same time a puppy or adult dog is in training. Why? There are several good reasons:

     1. When you send your dog to obedience training (for 2 weeks, usually) the dog is being given basic obedience skills…but what about you, the owner? When your dog comes home, do you continue the same commands, hand signals, rewards, and so on that the trainer at “dogie boot camp” used? Probably not! So the obedience training slowly erodes away and you become frustrated with your dog and your dog is confused!

     2. When your dog is being trained in obedience skills are treats being used to reinforce positive behaviors? Do you continue to use the same treats as the trainer? Are you using positive rewards and not just screaming.

     3. Was the dog trainer a male or female and is your dog in a household where the caretaker ship of the dog is shared by a man and woman? Or does your dog live in a one owner female household or one owner male household? This makes a massive difference in training, especially as related to voice commands! Dogs detect the difference in voice tone between woman and men.It may be desirable to have a female trainer if the dog is living with a single female and vise-versa.

     4. Who is the trainer training? Why both of you need to be trained. That is why “in home” pet training may be the best technique for positive and long lasting dog obedience training. A trainer can watch the dog in his/her own environment and help correct the dog and your way of handling problem behaviors. Remember, your dog may do well at training class then come home and_________well, you forget you’re Alpha not your dog! With a new puppy starting off correctly at home in your training prevents much frustration for both owner and dog!

     5. Consistent training commands ( voice-clicker-rewards) and praise, work with most dogs! It may be necessary to use an electronic collar in severe cases of barking or jumping, but not without proper training for the owner in use of such equipment. All owners of dogs must be trained to comprehend basic needs and instincts about their dog. An owner should also be educated about the breed, they have added to their family andvery special issues that may be related to that breed. Just because a puppy is cute and adorable – does not mean it will grow up to be the dog you want to spend years with, as your “best friend”.!

You must understand that dog training means – train the owner and the dog………..not just the dog. And “in home” training may be betterthan just sending your puppy or adult dog away for a few weeks and anticipating “wonder dog” to return! Your dog will follow your commands as long as you are in command…are consistent with your commands…give praise and love along with treats…and You Must Remember you are the Alpha Leader of the pack and house not your dog!

Portuguese Water Dogs is usually trained but you must be fast considering with this breed. Porties are incredibly clever. As a puppy my k9 Goji was responsive to dog treats, so you could reward him with food if he did something on command. This breed is as well clever for that human trick to last for long. Here’s what I did to start off education my standard PWD:

It is beneficial conditioning for him. I took mine towards the Marin Humane Society. Basically the course is greatest for exercise the owner. I required some catching up within the latest training tactics for dogs. Today you do not punish the k9 if he does anything bad, but only reward him for performing one thing excellent. That reward is often a handle. That’s what the course taught me. Socialization is what the course taught Goji, though he was well socialized at his breeder, Toraq. I learned to unlearn the exercise strategies I did with my black labrador retriever in an earlier incarnation. I was told not to negatively discipline my dog. It was hard for me to teach my pals not to discipline him when the mouthy puppy jumped on them and nipped their skin. I asked my family members and associates for being assertive and to knee the pet if he would jump up. It can be significant that the dog know who is in charge correct from the begin.

A month or so later he went into the Household Doggie I course in the same also at the Humane Culture. This taught him some commands and obedience, and that continued using the Spouse and children Doggy II course. I don’t think he really learned too quite a few commands there, but we did learn to obtain along greater together, which was great.

The Portuguese Water Doggy is truly more inclinedto care about praise a lot more than a treat, as an adult. My pet is extremely picky about treats now; when we go into a pet store as well as the shopkeepers offer him a handle, he regularly refuses it. Porties are very specific about their food, unlike other breeds. Here’s what he like nowadays:

Dried liver just like liver biscuit

Dried salmon sticks

Charlie Bear treats

Bil-jack biscuits

Fois Grois and Caviar

Red Barn rolled beef hide with chicken inside

Dried Kangaroo meat

Dried salmon tenders

Females train these dogs superior than adult men, in my opinion. The porties are a lot more responsive to their high pitched voices than men’s. I also believe Portie’s prefer the smell of ladies more than men. But this doesn’t mean that they do not extremely respect male masters; they do. They will need the master to obtain a total life. In truth, they have to have a working “captain from the ship” and you discover that quite quick when you could have a single of these dogs residing with you.

One unique point that the Portuguese Water Pet does not seem to obtain to find out is devotion to the master. We quickly realized that it truly is as if he thinks he’s living with a fisherman, and he is on a boat while using fisherman and becomes really devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion is not really to a working fisherman, but to some master. This has been built into Goji because he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems being only improving around the years. In the event you cannot handle this extreme devotion don’t bring a PWD home.

Image via Wikipedia

You should be consistent in your approach towards your dog

Keep intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction and praise consistent; then you will be help him understand commands by associating wtih the way it’s said.

If you issue conflicting commands your doggy will be confused compared to just one who has learned the same command over and above. 1 example of getting consistent is to let him out the same door every time he has to do his business. In this way he associates that door with needing to go out and will let you know by going to that door instead of somewhere in the house.

Remember of course that after every command that he successfully does, shower him with love and affection. Deal with him once in a while when he does appropriate because like a child it needs to become appreciated and given praise.

There are numerous technques to doggie instruction from positive reinforcement, understanding when to reward and when to punish, the effective way of punishing, howTo halt excessive barking and chewing and aggression to name a few.

Doggy instruction is an on-going process but one particular that may be full of rewards. You will create a bond with your pet that may be unbreakable. You will have a loyal companion for life and a friend forever.

There are several dog exercise ebooks, cd`s, dvd`s, seminars, groups and tips on training your doggie that you can find online. Find just one that you are comfortable with and provides all the necessary tools to help you in pet instruction.
