Dog breed: Portugese Water Dog – Part 1

The first Portuguese water dog I ever met was owned by a friend of my mother’s, who cut our hair. Every time I would come over for a hair cut I’d play with the dog, and he was very sweet to me even when I was little. At the time, it didn’t mean much to me that he didn’t shed. Now, seeing as I have a lab and frequently have to vacuum, I appreciate Portuguese water dogs even more. In the future I would definitelyThink about getting one of my own, as I’ve enjoyed the company ofEach one of these dogs that I have encountered.

These dogs, however, are not just good pets because they don’t shed. They are also incredibly good with children. The woman who owned Tucker (the Portuguese water dog) had two young children, and though Portuguese water dogs are Largedogs, they are usually very good with young children.

The reason they’re called Portuguese water dogs is because they were originally found along Portugal’s coast, and were used by fishermen to herd in nets and perform other water based tasks. As you can infer from that, Portuguese water dogs are also very good swimmers, and are also obedient and train quickly.

These dogs make wonderful pets for almost any family. They’re also good pets if you or a family member have an allergy to dogs, since they don’t shed. In addition to that, they’re very intelligent dogs and they learn quickly. They also tend to be quiet dogs, though they will bark if they feel threatened and will also bark if they see someone approaching the house. They can also be trained to bark when the phone rings, which helps if you are hard of hearing, as they can bark very loudly. Portuguese water dogs are often trained as dogs for the blind or deaf.

Portuguese water dogs require some grooming as their coat grows somewhat quickly. They are friendly with strangers and not incredibly aggressive. They will jump sometimes to greet, but can be trained not to.

Though very friendly and affectionate, this dog isn’t for everyone. Portuguese water dogs require a lot of attention as they’re a very active dog, and enjoy having their master spend time with them. If you don’t have time to walk or play with your dog, this is not the dog for you. If you do have time to train and play with your dog, a having a Portuguese water dog will be very rewarding. These dogs love to play fetch and enjoy activity within sight of a human companion, so they’ll rarely wander off.

When I first learned about Portuguese Water Dogs

It was in 2003 that my daughter brought a Portuguese Water Dog to my house. She was working for a family that owned one, and the dog came to my house for a few hours. He was a brown Porti, and I had never heard of the breed before. brown pwdThis dog’s name was Cocoa. He followed me all over the house, watching my every move. He would jump and play, even on furniture, and we’d a great time together. His owners have now trained him not to go on furniture.

Cocoa spent four days at my place a few months later.  We housesat the dog to help the other family. They were going to Tahoe, and dogs were not permitted at the place where they were going to be staying. Those four days were a lot of fun, and I bonded with this dog very well.

Training Your PWD Puppy

Portuguese Water Dogs can be trained but you have to be fast considering with this breed. Porties are incredibly clever. As a puppy my k9 Goji was responsive to dog treats, so you could reward him with food if he did one thing on command. This breed is as well clever for that human trick to last for lengthy. Here’s what I did to start off coaching my standard PWD:

It really is a great good conditioning for him. I took mine towards the Marin Humane Society. Truly the course is greatest for training the owner. I essential some catching up within the latest education approaches for dogs. Today you don’t punish the pet if he does a thing bad, but only reward him for performing a thing beneficial. That reward is really a treat. That is certainly what the course taught me. Socialization is what the course taught Goji, though he was well socialized at his breeder, Toraq. I learned to unlearn the coaching approaches I did with my black labrador retriever in an earlier incarnation. I was told not to negatively discipline my doggie. It was tough for me to instruct my close friends not to discipline him when the mouthy puppy jumped on them and nipped their skin. I asked my family and associates getting assertive and to knee the doggie if he would jump up. It’s crucial that the k9 know who is in charge proper from the begin.

A month or so later he went into the Family K9 I class at the same also on the Humane Society. This taught him some commands and obedience, and that continued while using the Loved ones K9 II class. I do not imagine he truly learned as well numerous commands there, but we did learn to obtain along far better together, which was very good.portuguese drinking water doggie Goji

The Portuguese Drinking water Pet is genuinely extra inclined to likepraise much more than a deal with, as an adult. My dog is incredibly picky about treats now; when we go into a pet store along with the shopkeepers provide him a deal with, he generally refuses it. Porties are quite distinct about their food, unlike other breeds. Here’s what he like these days:

  • Dried liver just like liver biscuit
  • Dried salmon sticks
  • Charlie Bear treats
  • Bil-jack biscuits
  • Fois Grois and Caviar
  • Red Barn rolled beef hide with chicken inside
  • Dried Kangaroo meat
  • Dried salmon tenders

Women train these dogs far better than guys, in my opinion. The porties are extra responsive to their high pitched voices than men’s. I also consider Portie’s prefer the smell of women over guys. But this doesn’t mean that they don’t quite respect male masters; they do. They need the master to obtain a complete life. In truth, they’ve to have a operating “captain with the ship” and also you understand that pretty fast when you’ve one of these dogs living with you.

Just one factor that the Portuguese Drinking water Doggy doesn’t seem to have to learn is devotion towards master. We speedily realized that it really is as if he thinks he is living with a fisherman, and he’s on a boat with all the fisherman and becomes quite devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion is not really to a functioning fisherman, but to some master. This has been built into Goji since he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems to be only growing more than the years. If you cannot handle this extreme devotion do not bring a PWD home.

  • You should be consistent in your approach towards your dog
  • Keep intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction and praise consistent; then you will be help him understand commands by associating wtih the way it’s said.
  • If you issue conflicting commands your doggie will be confused compared to one who has learned the same command above and above. One distinct example of getting consistent is to let him out the same door every time he has to do his business. In this way he associates that door with needing to go out and will let you know by going to that door instead of somewhere in the house.
  • Remember of course that after every command that he successfully does, shower him with love and affection. Deal with him once in a while when he does right because like a child it needs getting appreciated and given praise.
  • There are quite a few technques to doggy coaching from positive reinforcement, understanding when to reward and when to punish, the effective way of punishing, how To stopexcessive barking and chewing and aggression to name a few.
  • K9 exercise is an on-going process but one distinct which is full of rewards. You will create a bond with your pet which is unbreakable. You will have a loyal companion for life and a friend forever.
  • There are a lot of dog coaching ebooks, cd`s, dvd`s, seminars, groups and tips on coaching your doggy that you can find online. Find just one that you’re comfortable with and provides all the necessary tools to help you in pet exercise.

Spanish Water Dog

Weencountered twouncommon puppies, Scooter and Cricket, on our walk in Sausalito with our Black Portuguese Water Dog Goji. They were Spanish Water Dogs, SWD’s. We had never seen nor heard of this breed before. Smaller than a PWD, but the same high energy.

They have a docked tail (PWD’s never dock the tail). Their boatbuilder-owner is breeding them now. This video is from January 2007.

Is The Portuguese Water Dog Right For My Family?

The best family for a PWD is an active, outdoorsy one with older children. Porties make exceptional gun dogs when properly trained, and are eager to go camping, hiking, fishing, or swimming with their families. A well-raised Portie is devoted to his family, gets along with other pets, and is polite to strangers (although he’s willing to take action if he feels it’s necessary).

Although their weatherproof coats protect them from the elements, Porties should live indoors with their families. They may become bored when left alone for long periods of time; if the family is out of the house during the day they may come home to inventive destructiveness. Porties have a strong chewing instinct, and need to be trained to know what they’re allowed chew on and what they aren’t.
A medium-size house and yard are best, but they’ll get along fine in a smaller home or an apartment if they get at least one long, brisk, daily walk to satisfy their instinctual need to roam, and to work of excess energy. When they get sufficient exercise Porties are fairly calm and contented indoors.

Cocoa Happy in Singapore

Our pwd Goji’s ideal dog friend was Cocoa, the first portuguese water dog I’ve known.  Cocoa migrated to Singapore in October. We were worried about the long trip and quarantine, but Cocoa made it just fine and handled the ten day quarantine easily. Now Cocoa is enjoying his family in Singapore. Portuguese Water Dogs are very adaptable. We recently moved from our hourse of 30 years to a smaller place nearby, and Goji handled it well. He’s adjusting to not being by the San Francisco Bay all the time. Fortunately, the Bay is not too long a drive from his house.

Are Portuguese Water Dogs Hypoallergenic?

Choose Me Mr. President...Portuguese Water Dog

Portuguese Water Dogs have short hair that does not shed and is considered a working dog, meaning that it is a breed that needs to stay busy. This breed is considered a hypoallergenic dog. Traditionally used to aid in fishing expeditions, the Portuguese Water Dog is now kept as a house pet. While this breed is not as common as other breeds, if you want to dog that is hypoallergenic, lively, and enjoys companionship, then this breed may be the one for you.

Since the Portuguese Water Dog isn’t bred as often as other breeds of hypoallergenic dog, you’ll have to search for a breeder online, in the newspaper, or by calling breeders in your area until you find one. Generally happy dogs, the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with and you may wantto take into account crate training when you’re not at home. This means that the dog will stay in a crate when you go out so it does not destroy your home. When the PWD gets bored or lonely, it will chew on anything it finds.

Crate training should beginright after you bring the dog home. By placing a blanket, toys and water into the crate, you will make the dog comfortable while you’re away. You should not use the crate when punishing the dog or it will not want to go in it when you leave for the day. After training the dog, you’ll have to keep up the routine. This will give the dog structure and will also salvage your possessions. Keeping the dog in a crate when you are not at home will also reduce allergens.

Portuguese Water Dogs need to be groomed every two months or so. There are two patterns that most groomers follow, the retriever cut and the lion cut. The retriever cut means that the hair is cut evenly on the body. The lion cut leaves that front half of the dog’s body covered with hair, while hair on the hind legs is cut short. You should take the dog to have his hair groomed if you are not comfortable cutting it yourself.

If you’re considering buying a PWD, you should be prepared to have constant companionship. These breeds need to be walked and they need to be entertained throughout the day. If you need to travel on vacation or for work, you should board the dog so it won’t be lonely. Portuguese Water Dogs typically live between twelve and fifteen years.

Portuguese Water Dogs are simple going and get along with kids and most adults. If you’re looking for a breed that does not shed and will fit in with your family, then the PWD is the breed for you. While most Portuguese Water Dogs are black, some are white or a mix of both. Their hair is curly or wavy and similar to that of the standard poodle.

How Much does a Portugese Water Dog Cost?

A Portuguese Water Dog Puppy that’s a Pet at one time cost $1800. With the Obama’s dog Bo arriving at the White House we’ve not seen any price less than $2900. We anticipate that the price will go to $3500 and even $8000 . Breeders of this dog are most discriminating of who they sell to. The breeding is a specialized skill.

Show quality dogs should be $5000 to $14000.  If it is a “champion” the price could be over $25,000.

The maintenance of this breed is a considerable cost. They need to be groomed as puppies every 4 weeks, and as adults every 7 weeks.  This costs $89 up per visit.

They require high protein food such as frozen raw meat patties. My dog does not respond to treatstrained with treats], in fact I have not met any PWD’s that are food crazy. But that just means you needsuperior food. I recently gave Goji a can of Evanger’s dog food. It is high quality, human grade meat, and it’s even Kosher? Yet Goji rejected it, I don’t know what he was thinking. Yes he cares about dried Kangaroo meat. Now that is expensive food, about $35/pound. He also likes dried deer meat.

A trip to PetSmart can easily cost $100. I listed a typical shopping trip for Portugese Water Dog in another post. They don’t like regular tennis balls much, they like fancy assorted colored PetSmart tennis balls (recommended). They like high quality treats such as dried liver wrapped in bacon, “blue” biscuits, and anything liver. If you feed them too much protein they get Tiny wild|hyperactive], if too Littlethey get obviously too docile, 20% protein content is best.

Since this breed is designed to be a part of the crew of a fishing boat, he needs constant human companionship. As such, it isn’t good to leave him for more than 3 or 4 hours. And that doesn’t mean somebody can show up for ten minutes and leave, it means they must be around humans pretty much all the time. Also, they want to be around other dogs, and preferably other PWD’s. So what does this mean about cost? It means  play-dates with other Portugus Water Dogs, and lacking that constant trips to dog parks, walks, runs, outings, adventures, play, swimming, fetching, fighting, and mouthing. The cost part comes in Doggie Day Care. They play so hard at Day Care that the bonus is he is tired at night, and slower the next day. Figure $20 to $28/day.

Goji has been very healthy, but the vet maintenance should cost at least $300/year.

Here’s an update. We have recently learnged that a trained portuguese water dog, chocolate brown, sold for $7000. This wasn’t a puppy but an adult male. 12-10-2009

Water Dogs and the Portuguese Water Dog

The five breeds known as water dogs include the:
- Labrador Retriever – Spaniel – Portuguese Water dog – French Water Dog (Barbet) – Spanish Water Dog
Water dogs are in the news because the Obama family has one as their pet.
The ideal known water dogs which are in the US, and the United Kingdom are Labrador retrievers, and spaniels. There is no UK breed called a specifically an American, UK or English water dog but the spaniels probably come closest. On the Barbet breed web site it is recorded that, from ‘The Pictorial Museum of Animated Nature’ by Charles Knight (London: 1844), “The water-spaniel is extremely useful to persons engaged in the pursuit of water-fowl; it swims well, is very hardy, and is an excellent retriever”.
The Water Dogs would also in Portugal act as couriers, carrying messages between ships and from ship to shore; they would dive into the sea to retrieve broken fishing nets and equipment that had gone overboard. Often they would have to dive under water to retrieve submerged articles.
The Portuguese Water dogs are typical of the water dog breed family. They are generally happy dogs but the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with. Generally healthy, some can develop hip dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts. However, in spite of their thick, wavy coats, Portuguese Water Dogs are fairly easy to groom, needing only regular brushing and clipping.Goji my Portuguese Water dog age 5
Portuguese Water Dogs are very playful, obedient, and easy to train, and I can state they really enjoy retrieving games of any sort. They are medium-sized, usually described a “spirited but obedient.” They make a good dog for modern day boat owners. PWDs have a body that’s slightly longer than tall, the top line is straight and level and the brisket reaches the elbows. Sometimes called ‘Porties’ and ‘PWD’s, they’ve a broad chest andHuge head with a rounded skull, and heart-shaped ears that shouldn’t hang past their lower jaw.
They were, in times gone by, used for various duties while on board. The most used was their ability to retrieve nets and lost articles at sea, but some state that they were also good at herding fish to the nets. Another use was to get them barking in the fog to alert other boats of their location. This barking saved many boats in the cold foggy waters of Newfoundland, possibly before Christopher Columbus’ voyages.
Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent, rugged, robust, and love to work in and out of the water. They are exceptional swimmers and divers with great stamina.
As energetic, lively canines the Portuguese Water Dog adjusts well to nearly any lifestyle. They
need physical exercise and they love to swim.
If intending to show them please note that they’re a very tightly controlled breed in the US, but for the whole breed that is good as we doubt there are very many, if any, puppy farms involving the breed.
Portuguese water dogs are medium sized, strong swimmers and active energetic family pets. in fact they can make very good family pets with their cheerful attitude. They are very gentle with babies.
PWD’s can have either a wavy or curly coat. Some people call this a tousled coat, and it requires regular brushing, and also clipping and trimming. But do not expect your pet PWD to look like the show dogs you have seen in books or on TV, unless you are trained to do this or the trimmer you employ knows the technique.
They are a hypoallergenic breed making this a perfect choice for the Obama family.
They can come in black, black and white, brown, or brown and white. PWDs are very intelligent and obedient with those who work with them; but they’re also self-willed, and not a breed for everyone!
Those who are considering a Portuguese Water Dog should speak with the breeder about their plans for training and being active with the dog, to make sure the breed is a good fit with your lifestyle.
So to summarize, Portuguese Water Dogs are a good indication of the dogs which represent this category of breed. They are very loving, independent and intelligent dogs. They love attention while being glued to their master’s side. Portuguese water dogs are known to be great family pets.  For many families they will have a trusty intelligent companion in one of these water  dogs .
