I thought that the Obamas might be turned off by this breed after that incident, but I think instead they liked the PWD’s fun loving attitute, determination, will power, strength, courage, intelligence, appearance, hypo-allergenic fur, gaze, companionship, and need for exercise.

This is the only breed that can jump into a boat from the deep water. They were bred to jump. My group of dog-walking buddies have imagined stories of Obama’s Porti jumping on foreign Heads of States to greet them They won’t know what hit them. I don’t think this can be trained out of the breed, jumping is wired into them. It would be a comedy to have this breed  in the White House. I think the Obamas would enjoy this.

My porti is now a celebrity when I’m with him here  in Sausalito . People are curious about this ancient rare breed, and want to know what they’re like.  He’s not mistaken for a Poodle that much anymore; most people don’t want one when I describe the commitment of time that they need every day. It’s not a breed that you can leave alone in the house or apartment, and you definitely cannot leave him outside all day unattended. But I do think that the breed would be an asset at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In fact, they’ve to get a functioning “captain of the ship” and you learn that quite fast when you could have a single of these dogs living with you.

A single issue that the Portuguese Water Pet does not seem to get to understand is devotion for the master. We quickly realized that it’s as if he thinks he is residing with a fisherman, and he’s on a boat while using the fisherman and becomes extremely devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion is not definitely to some working fisherman, but to some master. This has been built into Goji since he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems to be only growing around the years. In case you cannot handle this extreme devotion do not bring a PWD home.

Comment by blogger: Comment by blogger: My porti sleeps on my bed, but not for long. Just a few minutes. He moves around all night. He needs fresh air often. The dog is clean somehow, this dog doesn’t lick. Since he doesn’t shed he can go on the furniture.

Comment by blogger: Yes he’s very good looking. After PWD’s are groomed they are adorable. 2 months later they can be dreaded and rastafar, then people don’t seem to think they’re adorable, just good looking. Women like him more after he’s groomed. My PWD  likes women very much.

Pres: “Apparently PWD’s like tomatoes, Michelle’s garden is in danger”.

Comment by Blogger: Our Porti Goji does not like tomatoes. He likes steak tatar  and sun dried salmon. Anything with liver he likes. Porties are very picky eaters. I’ve never seen a PWD eat a tomato. The President is being funny about that.

Comment by blogger: My portie doesn’t swim either. He loves to slosh around in the mud and water of the San Francisco Bay. He goes in the water every day. Goji’s ideal friend Cocoa, another Porti, also hardly swims. I saw Cocoa swim in a creek last week for the first time. He’s seven years old.

Their bites can be dangerous. They never bite humans on purpose. They are wired to respect us, but will body slam you when they greet you.
