Portuguese Water Dogs can be trained but you need to be quick thinking with this breed. Porties are very clever. As a puppy my pet Goji was responsive to dog treats, so you could reward him with food if he did a thing on command. This breed is as well clever for that human trick to last for lengthy. Here’s what I did to start off education my standard PWD:

It truly is a [very good conditioning for him. I took mine for the Marin Humane Society. In truth the course is most effective for instruction the owner. I needed some catching up in the latest coaching approaches for dogs. Currently you do not punish the k9 if he does some thing bad, but only reward him for doing something excellent. That reward is usually a deal with. That may be what the class taught me. Socialization is what the course taught Goji, though he was well socialized at his breeder, Toraq. I learned to unlearn the training strategies I did with my black labrador retriever in an earlier incarnation. I was told to not negatively discipline my doggie. It was difficult for me to teach my buddies not to discipline him when the mouthy puppy jumped on them and nipped their skin. I asked my family members and friends being assertive and to knee the pet if he would jump up. It can be important that the k9 know who is in charge right from the begin.

A month or so later he went into the Spouse and children K9 I class in the same also in the Humane Society. This taught him some commands and obedience, and that continued with all the Household Dog II class. I do not imagine he really learned too numerous commands there, but we did learn to obtain along far better together, which was quite good.

The Portuguese Water Dog is basically extra inclinedto care about praise more than a deal with, as an adult. My pet is really picky about treats now; when we go into a pet store as well as the shopkeepers offer him a deal with, he frequently refuses it. Porties are extremely particular about their food, unlike other breeds. Here’s what he like today:

Dried liver for instance liver biscuit

Dried salmon sticks

Charlie Bear treats

Bil-jack biscuits

Fois Grois and Caviar

Red Barn rolled beef hide with chicken inside

Dried Kangaroo meat

Dried salmon tenders

Women train these dogs greater than adult males, in my opinion. The porties are much more responsive to their high pitched voices than men’s. I also believe Portie’s prefer the smell of females more than adult males. But this doesn’t mean that they do not extremely respect male masters; they do. They require the master to possess a total life. In fact, they have to get a working “captain of the ship” and also you find out that quite quick when you’ve a single of these dogs living with you.

1 issue that the Portuguese Water Doggy doesn’t seem to possess to study is devotion to the master. We speedily realized that it is as if he thinks he’s residing with a fisherman, and he is on a boat while using fisherman and becomes extremely devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion is not really to a functioning fisherman, but to a master. This has been built into Goji since he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems for being only improving around the years. If you can’t handle this extreme devotion don’t bring a PWD residence.

You should be consistent in your approach towards your dog

Keep intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction and praise consistent; then you will be help him understand commands by associating wtih the way it truly is said.

If you issue conflicting commands your doggy will be confused compared to a single who has learned the same command over and more than. 1 example of getting consistent is to let him out the same door every time he has to do his business. In this way he associates that door with needing to go out and will let you know by going to that door instead of somewhere within the house.

Remember of course that after every command that he successfully does, shower him with love and affection. Handle him once in a while when he does right because like a child it needs getting appreciated and given praise.

There are numerous technques to pet coaching from positive reinforcement, understanding when to reward and when to punish, the effective way of punishing, howTo halt excessive barking and chewing and aggression to name a few.

Dog training is an on-going process but a single which is full of rewards. You will create a bond with your pet which is unbreakable. You will use a loyal companion for life and a friend forever.

There are several dog exercise ebooks, cd`s, dvd`s, seminars, groups and tips on exercise your dog that you can find online. Find just one that you are comfortable with and provides all the necessary tools to help you in k9 training.

Having a dog in a family that has kids can be quite troublesome as both dog and the kid may have problems in adjusting with each other. However, some breeds of dogs, especially the smaller ones, are known to be good dogs with children. Small dogs good with kids include Retrievers, Poodles, Beagles, Collies and Spaniels. Most popular variety is a Labrador retriever and if there is a small child in your family, you may want to get a Labrador to raise it with your child. As they’ll grow up together, they will automatically develop a strong relationship and interaction between them will be encouraged in a positive way.

Breeds of dogs
Getting massive dogs may intimidate your kids, this is why it issuggested to have small dog in your house that your children will find friendly and playful. A Labrador is usually the perfect size as it will not over power the child nor they’ll allow them to take unjustified advantage from them. Being highly energetic, they are able to play with your kids for hours and hours. Labradors are not just playful but also readily take to any kind of training they’re given.

They are also known for their good nature and patience that’s extremely required with children. They can be a dependable dog but they should be treated as a part of family only. Golden retrievers and Chesapeake Bay are other retrievers that prove to be good dogs with children.

Hounds, especially Schnauzer, Basset and Beagle, can be an excellent addition to a family with kids. They are good tempered and are smaller in size than retrievers. Bassets are known to be able to play all day long with the children. Collies are very patient and friendly and are quite docile as well as energetic around the children.

Some Collies have appeared in various TV shows and movies. Being smart and trustworthy, Spaniels may also prove to be a wise choice. They are usually even-tempered but pulling their long ears can quite disturbthem. You must wait until your kid grows up and does not get tempted to pull their ears.

Poodles are also small dogs which are quite famous for their immense loyalty and mild manners. They are simple to train and are quite smart and are often seen as acing dog shows. They are always playful and are fearless, althoughtoy poodles are not really recommendedfor homes with children. Dogs can be a wonderful member of a family, so you need to take adequate efforts to search for a loyal friend for your child.

Year after year, Labrador Retrievers have consistently ranked as one of the best family dogs. With their intelligence, and laid back demeanor they make an excellent choice when choosing a dog for your family. Here’s more about this breed…

History: The Labrador Retrievers roots, depending upon which theory you adhere to, either started in England or Newfoundland. Most theories suggestthat the origin of the Labrador Retriever dates back to Newfoundland in the 1700s, where they were originally considered a smaller version of the Newfoundland, and might even have been a partial cross of a now extinct St. Johns dog and theMore massiveNewfoundland. By the 1800s, the Labrador began making its way to England and European countries, but compliments for refining the breed as a hunting and retrieving dog go to the English breeders. They are known for being black in color originally, with the first yellow and chocolate colored Lab’s being recorded around the end of the 19th century.

To this day the Labrador Retriever was and still is used for bird hunting and retrieval of birds in the water. Even though Todaythe Retriever is a natural when used for bird hunting, they were in the past, excellent at retrieving fish too, and still show their love for a good swim. Said to have originated in Newfoundland, there are those who speculate that the Labrador name comes from the Canadian Province of Labrador. Popular among breeders in Canada around the 1800s, the Labrador Retriever only made it’s way to America in the early 1900s, where it was finally registered with the American Kennel Club in1917.

Description: Thriving in all types of weather, the Labrador Retriever has a thick, resistant to water coat, that comes in the various flavors of yellow, black or chocolate brown. Female Labrador Retrievers weigh in at around 55-75 pounds, while theMore massivemale tips the scale at between 65-80 pounds. the height of the Labrador can range from 21-24 inches tall. Some of the beautiful features that this dog possesses include their muscular hind legs combined with an otter like tail, most often recognized while in their stance. They are also known for their proud, powerful looking head.

Life Span: 10-13 years

Common Ailments: May be prone toHip and Elbow Dysphasia which might cause problems with mobility and arthritis in it’s later years. otherwise, this is a hardy dog breed. Another possible ailment known to this breed is called Retinal Atrophy which is a progressive disease that results in reduction or complete loss of vision.

Suitability with Children: Yes, a very even tempered breed as well as gentle natured.

Suitability with Other Pets: Yes

Living Conditions: Labrador Retrievers do ideal in a home with aMassiveyard or with land. They are easily adaptable though, and would also do well in an apartment or with a small yard if received plenty of exercise on a daily basis.

Training: This breed is easily trainable as a puppy. Combining their intelligence with their simple trainability makes them one of the most powerful combinations as abetter working dog and excellent sporting dog, as well as a wonderful family pet. Remember that Labradors need consistency and reinforcement from the time they’re puppies and they will grow into a strong and gentle family pet.

Exercise Required: High

Expense to maintain: Low

Breed Temperament: Being definitely a favored breed in America, just about every puppy in the pound will state they have some Labrador in their blood. If not, many owners will make the claim that they do because of their gentle nature despite their size, as well as their extreme intelligence and ease at training. There is no doubt about it, the Labradors loyalty, agreeable temperament and affectionate nature are what causes this to be one of the most popular dog breeds around.

Keep in mind that Labradors find their greatest happiness when they’re outdoors sporting or exercising on a regular basis. While Labrador Retrievers can adapt to nearly any living environment, owners will find they are most content when they’re regularly exercised. If not regularly exercised, especially as a puppy, owners could find that they will turn towards destructive habits, like chewing furniture. Also, Labs that are not regularly exercised show a tendency to put on weight, as they sure love to eat.

All things considered, Labrador Retrievers will make a wonderful family pet with aTiny extra TLC, and along with the tender loving care, do not forget the extra running, fetching or swimming!

When Richard Livitski isn’t busy digging up information on Labrador Retrievers, he is working on his dog names website http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names as well as other helpful dog related topics can be found.

Choosing the right family dog can be a difficult decision. There are several factors to take into consideration, and different types of dogs may be appropriate for different families. First example, if your household includes children, you may want a different breed of dog than if your family includes only adults. This article contains a few tips that can help you get started.

Whether you buy your dog from a pet store or chooseto adopt him or her from an animal shelter, you will most likely be able to chooseamong several different breeds, gender, and maybe even the age of the dog. No matter where you decide to look, there are a few factors you should consider.

<img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/17/20184422_eae7fe3ded_m.jpg" alt="Vintage family, dog, home, and car"">

The first is that you’re acquiring a family pet, not just a companion. This means that the dog you choosewill need to get along with the entire family. That is why you shouldselect a breed that is suitable for people of all ages and with different personalities. If you don’t have children, but are considering starting a family, you will want to make sure the breed youselect will work well withTiny ones, especially babies.

While some Biggerdogs are okay around children, some are thought to become more violent more easily, so probably would not be the right type of dog to be around small children. If your dog tends to be ill-tempered, you might need to considerthis before having children, or be willing to find the dog a new home when the kids arrive. Also, some breeds of dog tend to be a bit nervous around children, so this is something you’ll definitely wantto take into account if you already have children and are thinking about getting a dog.

Space can also prove to be an issue. For example, if you do not have much of a back yard, or do not have a yard at all, you would not want to get a dog that would stay outside most of the time. There are several reasons for this, the first of which is that dog would not have a lot of room to run and play. This is just as essential for dogs as it is for humans, as good exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle and for dogs, can help to promote good behavior. Think about the size of your home before actually choosing a dog. If the dog will have ample room to run around and be comfortable, and is well-tempered, it will most likely be a good choice for a family dog.

The five breeds known as water dogs include the:
- Labrador Retriever – Spaniel – Portuguese Water dog – French Water Dog (Barbet) – Spanish Water Dog
Water dogs are in the news because the Obama family has one as their pet.
The best known water dogs which are in the US, and the United Kingdom are Labrador retrievers, and spaniels. There is no UK breed called a specifically an American, UK or English water dog but the spaniels probably come closest. On the Barbet breed web site it is recorded that, from ‘The Pictorial Museum of Animated Nature’ by Charles Knight (London: 1844), “The water-spaniel is extremely useful to persons engaged in the pursuit of water-fowl; it swims well, is very hardy, and is an excellent retriever”.
The Water Dogs would also in Portugal act as couriers, carrying messages between ships and from ship to shore; they would dive into the sea to retrieve broken fishing nets and equipment that had gone overboard. Often they would have to dive under water to retrieve submerged articles.
The Portuguese Water dogs are typical of the water dog breed family. They are generally happy dogs but the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with. Generally healthy, some can develop hip dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts. However, in spite of their thick, wavy coats, Portuguese Water Dogs are fairly easy to groom, needing only regular brushing and clipping.
Portuguese Water Dogs are very playful, obedient, and simple to train, and I can state they really enjoy retrieving games of any sort. They are medium-sized, usually described a “spirited but obedient.” They make a good dog for modern day boat owners. PWDs have a body that is slightly longer than tall, the top line is straight and level and the brisket reaches the elbows. Sometimes called ‘Porties’ and ‘PWD’s, they have a broad chest andHuge head with a rounded skull, and heart-shaped ears that shouldn’t hang past their lower jaw.
They were, in times gone by, used for various duties while on board. The most used was their ability to retrieve nets and lost articles at sea, but some state that they were also good at herding fish to the nets. Another use was to get them barking in the fog to alert other boats of their location. This barking saved many boats in the cold foggy waters of Newfoundland, possibly before Christopher Columbus’ voyages.
Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent, rugged, robust, and love to work in and out of the water. They are exceptional swimmers and divers with great stamina.
As energetic, lively canines the Portuguese Water Dog adjusts well to nearly any lifestyle. They
need physical exercise and they love to swim.
If intending to show them please note that they are a very tightly controlled breed in the US, but for the whole breed that is good as we doubt there are very many, if any, puppy farms involving the breed.
Portuguese water dogs are medium sized, strong swimmers and active energetic family pets. in fact they can make very good family pets with their cheerful attitude. They are very gentle with babies.
PWD’s can have either a wavy or curly coat. Some people call this a tousled coat, and it requires regular brushing, and also clipping and trimming. But don’t expect your pet PWD to look like the show dogs you have seen in books or on TV, unless you’re trained to do this or the trimmer you employ knows the technique.
They are a hypoallergenic breed making this a perfect choice for the Obama family.
They can come in black, black and white, brown, or brown and white. PWDs are very intelligent and obedient with those who work with them; but they’re also self-willed, and not a breed for everyone!
Those who are considering a Portuguese Water Dog should speak with the breeder about their plans for training and being active with the dog, to make sure the breed is a good fit with your lifestyle.
So to summarize, Portuguese Water Dogs are a good indication of the dogs which represent this category of breed. They are very loving, independent and intelligent dogs. They love attention while being glued to their master’s side. Portuguese water dogs are known to be great family pets. For many families they’ll have a trusty intelligent companion in one of these water dogs .

Of course we would all like to believe that our dog is the smartest dog in the world but honestly there are some breeds that usually are more intelligent then others and of course, there are some dogs that are just plain stupid as stupid is… I had one like that when I was a child. I still loved him just the same though.

In this article I will give you the top ten count down of the most intelligent dogs in the world. Do not be too concerned if your dog does not appear in either of these lists, as sometimes it isn’t always an advantage to have an intelligent dog. As expected, the more intelligent dogs generally need more stimulation or they will get bored and this can cause problems, particularly if they are left at home during the day when you are at work.

So lets startour count down with the tenth most intelligent dog…

Tenth on the list is the Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog was originally bred for herding cattle, just as their name suggests. Obviously to be tenth on the list they are very intelligent, but they need to be stimulated, as one would anticipate from an intelligent dog. They are happy when they are working, as they need regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Ninth on the list is the Rottweiler.
Contrary to popular belief, the Rottweiler is actually a great family dog, and is not quite as fearsome as many people are led to believe. There are a highly intelligent dogs and respond well to training.

The eighth dog on the list of intelligence is the Papillon.
Like the Australian cattle dog the Papillon is very protective of its owner and makes a lovable and intelligent pet. And as with most intelligent dogs they are relatively simple to train.

Number seven on the list is the Labrador Retriever.
These are one of the most popular family dogs because of their good nature, which allows them to socialize well with other dogs and more importantly, children. Like the previous dogs on the list, Labradors need exercise, and particularly in their case, without exercise they tend to gain excessive weight.

Number six on our list of intelligent dogs is the Shetland sheepdog.
Like the Australian Cattle Dog the Shetland sheepdog were originally bred for herding cattle and sheep. Obviously to do this well they need some intelligence and that’s why they’ve ended at number six on our list. They’re not quite as good at socializing with other people or kids but are excellent pets in their own family.

And at number five on that list is the Doberman.
It is important that the Doberman is trained early on in its life, as they can be quite temperamental. If they are trained they can be great family dogs and really good with kids despite their reputation. They are highly intelligent, and like many intelligent dogs are very protective of their master and family.

Number four is the Golden Retriever.
It is often regarded as one of the most popular breeds of dog. They are great with kids and are a very loyal and loving dog. It isn’t uncommon to see Golden Retrievers winning dog competitions where intelligence is of importance.

At number three it is the German Shepard!
The German Shepard is a dog that’s often associated with police work and it is chosen for its police work due to its high intelligence. They make great family dogs and love children. They need to be kept busy with work or some form of stimulation otherwise they can become depressed and unhappy. They need to know who their master is from a young age to ensure both they and the family get the most out of their relationship.

The Poodle comes in at number two!
The second most intelligent dog might surprise a lot of people. Not only for the fact that they are highly intelligent, but also because they are one of the easiest dogs to train. They love people, and because of this they do not like to be left alone. They are very protective and can become quite vicious if anybody encroaches upon their property or territory.

And the number one all-time most intelligent dog of all is the Border Collie!
The Border Collie is another dog that’s often seen winning competitions. They are highly intelligent, but along with that intelligence comes the need for them to be stimulated regularly.
They are happiest when they are working or performing in competitions or dog trials. So there you go, if you’ve a Border Collie, you know you have the most intelligent dog in the world, provided of course, that you’ve trained it well.
