I had owned a Black Lab before, so I wanted a large dog. My husband is allergic to animals, so he wanted a Poodle, same as his parents had. I pictured us dealing with monthly grooming bills. We got so far as to look at a few Poodle pups, but at $1250, I decided to look a Littlefarther.

What I found surprised me. The breed that kept coming up in my research was the Labradoodle. A cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, the Labradoodle has many advantages. Both breeds are highly intelligent, both are friendly, and both are great family dogs. The advantage to crossing the two is that the low dander of the Poodle seems to take dominance and the result is an allergy friendly dog, usually with the ideal traits of both breeds. I state usually, because hip dysplasia is an ailment common to both breeds and that could be an inherent weakness for the animal. Doodle pups are tested for both that ailment and for eye diseases that are common to both breeds.

Other facts about the Labradoodle, or LD, that surprised me were that though they were just recently introduced to America, Australians have been breeding and refining the breed since the 70s. The difference between an American LD and an Australian one is that the Australians used several breeds of dogs in their program. In an effort to standardize the breed, each breeder was allowed to use only certain breeds in their mix. One breeder was permitted to include Portuguese Water Dogs in their mix. Another was allowed only Wheaten Terriers to be added. Though the American LDs are still considered hybrids, the Australian LDs are now recognized as a breed by their kennel clubs. In 1997, the breed standard was written toSay the only approved parentage of an Australian LD is the Poodle, Labrador Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Water Spaniel. In 2004, the mix officially became a breed in that country.

There are certain terms used to define Labradoodles. An F1 is a first generation cross, or a Labrador to a Poodle. An F1B is a Labradoodle backcrossed to a Poodle, which usually results in pups with more of a Poodle coat, a Lab Poodle. An F2 is the offspring of two F1 LDs, and the offspring of two F2s would be referred to as “multi-gen”, or multi-generational.

Coats vary from Doodle to Doodle. An F1 may have one of three coats: a wool coat, a hair coat or a fleece coat. Wool coats and fleece coats don’t shed, hair coats do. I have a hair coated

When I was a child, I had a beagle. I love beagles. When I married, and we both worked, I had miniature long haired dachshunds…they were astonishing little fellas. And now, that I am home and my husband is home battling MS, we have 3Huge dogs, 2 black labs and 1 golden retriever. The right breed at the right time in your life is the secret to happiness with your chosen four legged friend.

A dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar or almost identical characteristics of appearance or behavior or, usually, both, primarily because they come from a selectset of ancestors who had the same characteristics. See the many breeds in a directory of breed of dogs. The AKC will always have up to date directories.

Dogs have been selectively bred for specific characteristics for thousands of years. Initially the selections would have centered on domestication and useful behavior such as hunting ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive forms, resulting in a vast variety of types.

People seem to have a fascination with Poodleblended breeds. Poodles are very intelligent and do not shed. Many different Poodle mixes are emerging.

A Labradoodle is a crossbred dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. Their temperament makes them good service dogs.

The impetus behind experiments with this type of cross was the desire to achieve a service dog that wouldn’t shed and so produce a hypoallergenic dog that’s suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander. This has not yet been reliably achieved, as Labradoodles have varying coat lengths and textures, and crosses beyond the first generation don’t yield a predictable coat type.

And its not just Poodle mixes, many different “designer” dogs (as the media has labeled them) are immerging.

Designer Dog? What s a designer dog you ask? A “designer” dog, as the media has labeled them, is a cross between two pure bred dogs.

Whether or not you choosea pure bred dog or a “designer” hybrid mix, do your homework and research, research, research. Remember, adopting a dog is a life long commitment and not something that should be taken lightly. Before you adopt a dog ask yourself exactly what it is you are looking for in your dog.

How many breeds of dogs are there? Well, that depends on whom you ask. The American Kennel Club, which registers purebred dogs, officially recognizes 150 different breeds of dogs. As of the time of writing this article. This can change.

Dog breeds can be divided into different categories, such as:

Hunting
Hounds, including Sight hounds and Scent hounds
Gundogs, including Pointers, Retrievers, and Spaniels
Terrier
Curs and Feists
Working (or Utility)
Pastoral dogs, including Livestock guardian dogs, Herding dogs, Sheepdogs, and Drovers
Sled dog
Bulldogs
Extinct dog breeds
Fighting dogs
Toy
Dog breeds can also be grouped into similar types such as mastiff types, spitz types, pit bulls, or Lurchers.

For interest sake, ther is also a complete List of Ancient dog breeds.

Fourteen ancient breeds of dog have recently been identified through advances in DNA analysis. These breeds of domesticated dog show the fewest genetic differences from wolves. The breeds are geographically diverse, including dogs from Siberia, Japan, Alaska, China, Tibet, and Africa.

The identification of the fourteen “Ancient” dog breeds was established in the article “Genetic Structure of the Purebred Domestic Dog” in the journal Science Volume 304 (May 21, 2004).

The following are the dog breeds listed as ancient in the published study and their countries of origin:

Afghan Hound (Afghanistan)
Akita (Japan)
Alaskan Malamute (United States (Alaska))
Basenji (Congo)
Chow Chow (China)
Lhasa Apso (Tibet)
Pekingese (China)
Saluki (Egypt)
Samoyed (Siberia)
Shar Pei (China)
Shiba Inu (Japan)
Shih Tzu (China/Tibet)
Siberian Husky (Siberia)
Tibetian Terrier (Tibet)

Controversy:
There is some controversy over the results of the study, as some have noted that breeding between wolves and specific breeds in recent times may have led to inaccurate results. As a result of these breedings, the offspring would have gained genetic similarities with wolves and may mask the truth about the real differences between the breed and wolves before these interbreedings.

You will find the Labradoodle is intelligent, intuitive, and very full of energy. They do very well as companions, but doesn’t make a service dog. In other words while they can be great hunting dogs they don’t make for good therapy dogs or seeing- eye dogs. They tend to have both a poodle and Labrador mentality making them very excitable. You will also find they can make a great family pet as long as they have been trained. They can be excessively energetic and sometimes don’t make the ideal pets for smaller children. Training as a puppy is very important to help them learn proper techniques and reign in the energy just a little. If you do train them properly they can be around children.

Training should be for both a lab and poodle since they’re mixed. You should be able to combine sport activity along with obedience. Labradors tend to be very energetic and without proper training they will continue to be disobedient because they would ratherplay. The poodle in them can make them aTiny anti social. You will find they’re very simple to train for indoors, but consistent training and a firm hand is needed. You should always take your Labradoodle for walks daily to offer them plenty ofchance to play and have fun. You will also find a medium yard is needed. They do not do well in condos or apartments. If you work during the day you should have them tied to a runner in the yard to let them explore and play. They require at least two hours of interaction such as walking, running, and playing with toys for the ideal health and happiness.

As long as you train your Labradoodle and offer plenty of affection and activities you will find them to be a great addition to your family. You should startof with a puppy, especially if you are planning on having children to help them adapt to the social requirements they’ll need to have.
Care of the Labradoodle is fairly easy. They require regular brushing as the hair can become quite tangled. They have the poodle style coat, which means longer hair, rather than the Labrador coat which is usually short. In order to keep shedding down you’ll need to brush them. You should be able to clip them just once a year. You will also find this dog breed to be hypo- allergenic. In other words they tend to suffer from several allergies so they can have health problems due to respiratory issues.

They can be chalk, cream, apricot, chocolate, cafÈ, or black and silver. You will also find they can be a mix of these colors. They are one of the most interesting breeds despite being ablended breed. You will find they usually weigh between 25 and 90 pounds. They stand about 13- 22 inches from the ground making them a short dog.
