Portuguese Water Dogs is usually trained but you need to be quick considering with this breed. Porties are really clever. As a puppy my pet Goji was responsive to dog treats, so you could reward him with food if he did anything on command. This breed is too clever for that human trick to last for lengthy. Here’s what I did to start out instruction my standard PWD:

It can be beneficial conditioning for him. I took mine to the Marin Humane Society. Actually the class is most effective for education the owner. I necessary some catching up inside latest coaching approaches for dogs. These days you don’t punish the doggie if he does a thing bad, but only reward him for doing a thing great. That reward is really a handle. That is what the class taught me. Socialization is what the class taught Goji, though he was well socialized at his breeder, Toraq. I learned to unlearn the exercise strategies I did with my black labrador retriever in an earlier incarnation. I was told not to negatively discipline my k9. It was complicated for me to teach my associates not to discipline him when the mouthy puppy jumped on them and nipped their skin. I asked my loved ones and buddies to be assertive and to knee the doggie if he would jump up. It’s essential that the doggie know who is in charge appropriate from the start off.

A month or so later he went into the Loved ones Doggie I course in the same also on the Humane Society. This taught him some commands and obedience, and that continued using the Family Pet II class. I don’t imagine he genuinely learned as well several commands there, but we did discover to get along superior together, which was great.

The Portuguese Drinking water Dog is actually extra inclinedto enjoypraise extra than a deal with, as an adult. My pet is quite picky about treats now; when we go into a pet store and also the shopkeepers offer you him a deal with, he generally refuses it. Porties are quite particular about their food, unlike other breeds. Here’s what he like currently:

Dried liver such as liver biscuit

Dried salmon sticks

Charlie Bear treats

Bil-jack biscuits

Fois Grois and Caviar

Red Barn rolled beef hide with chicken inside

Dried Kangaroo meat

Dried salmon tenders

Ladies train these dogs far better than adult men, in my opinion. The porties are additional responsive to their high pitched voices than men’s. I also think Portie’s choose the smell of ladies above males. But this doesn’t mean that they do not extremely respect male masters; they do. They require the master to have a total life. In reality, they’ve to obtain a working “captain with the ship” and you discover that pretty quick when you might have a single of these dogs residing with you.

A single thing that the Portuguese Drinking water Dog does not seem to possess to find out is devotion to the master. We quickly realized that it really is as if he thinks he is residing with a fisherman, and he’s on a boat while using fisherman and becomes extremely devoted to him. Goji despises boats, so the devotion is not truly to a functioning fisherman, but to a master. This has been built into Goji because he came to our house at age 9 weeks. This unlearned trait seems to become only increasing more than the years. If you ever cannot handle this extreme devotion do not bring a PWD household.

Image via Wikipedia

You should be consistent in your approach towards your dog

Keep intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction and praise consistent; then you’ll be help him understand commands by associating wtih the way it truly is said.

If you issue conflicting commands your doggy will be confused compared to a single who has learned the same command above and above. A single example of getting consistent is to let him out the same door every time he has to do his business. In this way he associates that door with needing to go out and will let you know by going to that door instead of somewhere inside the house.

Remember of course that after every command that he successfully does, shower him with love and affection. Treat him once in a while when he does right because like a child it needs for being appreciated and given praise.

There are a lot of technques to k9 training from positive reinforcement, understanding when to reward and when to punish, the effective way of punishing, howTo ceaseexcessive barking and chewing and aggression to name a few.

Doggie instruction is an on-going process but just one that is full of rewards. You will create a bond with your pet that is certainly unbreakable. You will possess a loyal companion for life and a friend forever.

There are a lot of dog exercise ebooks, cd`s, dvd`s, seminars, groups and tips on education your pet that you can find online. Find one distinct that you’re comfortable with and provides all the necessary tools to help you in k9 training.

The ideal family for a PWD is an active, outdoorsy one with older children. Porties make exceptional gun dogs when properly trained, and are eager to go camping, hiking, fishing, or swimming with their families. A well-raised Portie is devoted to his family, gets along with other pets, and is polite to strangers (although he’s willing to take action if he feels it’s necessary).

Although their weatherproof coats protect them from the elements, Porties should live indoors with their families. They may become bored when left alone for long periods of time; if the family is out of the house during the day they may come home to inventive destructiveness. Porties have a strong chewing instinct, and need to be trained to know what they are allowed chew on and what they aren’t.
A medium-size house and yard are best, but they’ll get along fine in a smaller home or an apartment if they get at least one long, brisk, daily walk to satisfy their instinctual need to roam, and to work of excess energy. When they get adequate exercise Porties are fairly calm and contented indoors.

Ready for a puppy? Great! If you’re looking for a dog that’ll work best with your family,Think about the fact that dogs between the ages of 1 and 5 are best with children. This is because dogs in this age range aren’t as excitable and wanting to play rough as puppies do. Small dogs at this age aren’t old enough to suffer health problems that make older dogs cranky.

The ideal way to find a puppy good with children is to adopt one from an rescue center. And there you can ask them what kind of temperament the puppy has. Many shelters test puppies to see how they react to a child environment. Puppies from shelters normally live with volunteers who train them to get used the experiences they’ll find in their permanent home. Ask for a pet that has lived with children.

When at the shelter, test for yourself how the small dog reacts to a gentle touch to his ears. Touch the paws and try putting your finger in his mouth to see what he does. On the floor, try running around and make some noise. Watch the reaction. You are looking for a puppy that accepts the same behavior you will have around your house.

Did you know you can adopt dogs from guide-dog training programs? These are pups that didn’t make the cut as a seeing-eye dog, but make wonderful pets.

If your heart is set on a purebred dog, my advice is to look at the Motherand dad of the puppy you are interest in. Their temperament will tell all. If they are sweet, the puppy will be as well. It would surprise you to find many dogs considered good with children are mean spirited because of the parents.

That said, there really are some breedssuperior than others for homes with children. For example, the sporting breeds of retrievers and spaniels are known to be gentle. They enjoy to be touched and their bite is generally soft. They are high energy, however, and as puppies can have sharp teeth that can hurt when they nip.

As the world now longs for toy breeds, believe it or not, these aren’t the best with children. The are more self-preserving and can get injured much easier than aMassivebreed. Dogs that were bred to herd, like border collies, can chase children and bite them.

If you are serious about finding if the dog will be best with your family, you can employ the services of a professional dog trainer in your area and have them run a temperament assessment. They charge around $75 an hour – but it may be worth it. If you use the trainer later with your dog, they will probably do the assessment for free.

In a 2006 study on dog bites by Pediatrics, they recommendthat parents wait until children are of school age before getting a dog. Babies were the most likely tobe bitten by dogs they knew. Always supervise interaction between dogs and kids.

There comes a time in most home families when the children get a bit older and their dog or teddy is no longer the best thing in the world to play with, every new friend or existing friend your children make seems to have a cute little dog, and its only a matter of time before your kids are going tobegin pestering you for one. So what should you look for is your serious about getting a family dog?

For starters your dog will need to be able to take everything your kids can throw at it, children often don’t have any idea of how to handle a new pet dog so don’t expect them to play gently all the time, unknowing children have a tendency to be aTiny rough wile playing with dogs so a dog breed that can take some rough playing is essential.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/3972998620_a470c0ac76_m.jpg" alt="Graphic Dead family pet dogs & puppies killed by the city of Denver, CO because of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) discrimination"">

Different dogs have different personalities just like humans do so be aware of this when purchasing a new dog, just because a dog breed is normally playful, energetic, and nice , this does not mean the one you get will be the same. Being prepared to put in work and time with your dog is also essential with a family dog because dog’s often take the things your children tell it to do as acceptable when this may not be the case, so dog behavior training will be needed at some point.

After considering the previous paragraphs I’m sure you will be pretty certain on whether you still want a dog for your home or not, if you do then here are some suggestionson different breeds that you may want to consider.

Golden Retriever. The golden retriever is a good popular choice for families because of their active and loyal personality and a good all round dog.

Boxer. Although the boxer may look massive and intimidating to some, the boxer is a very good family dog in that they love being around people, they take care of the family members, and are always willing to play.

Labrador Retreiver. An extremely popular pet in many households across the world, the Labrador is a very friendly loving dog that loves to play and be very active for your kids to play with.

Beagle. The beagle is a very sturdy dog that can take plenty of roughness and playing, and cares about to be active and meet new people. A very excited and curious dog that’s great for family life.

Boston Terrier. The terrier is a gentle, well mannered dog and enjoys a challenge. Boston terriers are very simple to train and make for great family dogs and friends.

Irish Setter. A very affectionate dog, the Irish setter is a very good choice for families due to its liking for kids and constant happy playful attitude.

A very important issue, when choosing a dog has to do with the owner’s desire and ability to provide leadership to the dog. A person who doesn’t like saying “No” or setting and enforcing rules, is not likely to be happy with a dog that is known for its strong personality or that has been bred to “think for itself” as shepherds have been. When it doesn’t have a leader, what people refer to as an “alpha dog” to set the rules, a dog can become confused about how to behave. In this way, a dog is similar to a child. Without rules that are clear and consistent, both dogs and kids will frequently be in trouble and unhappy. To be a “Top Dog” in a family, a dog has to fit in. Rules help your pet understand and fit in to the structure of your family.

Every year, dogs that are bought or adopted, end up being too much trouble for the family. Many of those dogs end up at the Humane Society or with rescue organizations. This is frequently because the familyDidn’t provide the consistent leadership that the dog needed. The family membersDidn’t have the “alpha dog” authority that was important for their pet to learn the rules it needed to know how to fit in.

If you hate rules, telling others what to do or have a passive personality and you REALLY want a dog (rather than a cat or a ferret),Think about choosing a breed that’s known for its desire to please its owner like a pug or a Japanese Chin. This does not meanselect a small dog because many of the smaller breeds can be very strong-minded. A Chihuahua will take charge of the family, if they’re left without structure for their behavior. A Great Dane will be a cooperative family member if given clear rules and those rules are consistently enforced. However, if you are reluctant to tell it to get off your couch, you’re likely to be without a place to sit down yourself unless you’re under the dog.

Terriers are not great for a low energy person unless the person is looking for a reason to become more active. On the other hand, a person who is lonesome and feels isolated may do well with a terrier because both the person and terrier may like the attention that a terrier will surely seek from its owner.

If you cannot stand barking, you may want to considera Basenji or another breed known for not barking. If you like your own space, look for a breed that’s more independent and is not bred to be a lap dog. Mind you, a Great Dane is more than willing to lounge with its head on your lap, if you are so inclined. Make sure to do your research. Adopting a pet should mean that you are choosing to be a responsible owner for the lifetime of your dog.

Consider checking at the Humane Society, rescue organizations or your local pound. Your Top Dog may be waiting there for you to adopt it. Once you chooseyour dog, it is important to know and remember that, like people, dogs respond betterto kindness and rewards than they do to punishment. If you know what your rules are for your pet, are consistent in its training and reward appropriate behavior, you will have a Top Dog for life.

Of course we would all like to believe that our dog is the smartest dog in the world but honestly there are some breeds that usually are more intelligent then others and of course, there are some dogs that are just plain stupid as stupid is… I had one like that when I was a child. I still loved him just the same though.

In this article I will give you the top ten count down of the most intelligent dogs in the world. Do not be too concerned if your dog does not appear in either of these lists, as sometimes it is not always an advantage to have an intelligent dog. As expected, the more intelligent dogs generally need more stimulation or they will get bored and this can cause problems, particularly if they’re left at home during the day when you are at work.

So letsbegin our count down with the tenth most intelligent dog…

Tenth on the list is the Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog was originally bred for herding cattle, just as their name suggests. Obviously to be tenth on the list they’re very intelligent, but they need to be stimulated, as one would expect from an intelligent dog. They are happy when they are working, as they need regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Ninth on the list is the Rottweiler.
Contrary to popular belief, the Rottweiler is actually a great family dog, and is not quite as fearsome as many people are led to believe. There are a highly intelligent dogs and respond well to training.

The eighth dog on the list of intelligence is the Papillon.
Like the Australian cattle dog the Papillon is very protective of its owner and makes a lovable and intelligent pet. And as with most intelligent dogs they’re relatively simple to train.

Number seven on the list is the Labrador Retriever.
These are one of the most popular family dogs because of their good nature, which grants them to socialize well with other dogs and more importantly, children. Like the previous dogs on the list, Labradors need exercise, and particularly in their case, without exercise they tend to gain excessive weight.

Number six on our list of intelligent dogs is the Shetland sheepdog.
Like the Australian Cattle Dog the Shetland sheepdog were originally bred for herding cattle and sheep. Obviously to do this well they need some intelligence and that is why they’ve ended at number six on our list. They’re not quite as good at socializing with other people or kids but are excellent pets in their own family.

And at number five on that list is the Doberman.
It is important that the Doberman is trained early on in its life, as they can be quite temperamental. If they’re trained they can be great family dogs and really good with children despite their reputation. They are highly intelligent, and like many intelligent dogs are very protective of their master and family.

Number four is the Golden Retriever.
It is often regarded as one of the most popular breeds of dog. They are great with children and are a very loyal and loving dog. It isn’t uncommon to see Golden Retrievers winning dog competitions where intelligence is of importance.

At number three it is the German Shepard!
The German Shepard is a dog that is often associated with police work and it is chosen for its police work due to its high intelligence. They make great family dogs and love children. They need to be kept busy with work or some form of stimulation otherwise they can become depressed and unhappy. They need to know who their master is from a young age to ensure both they and the family get the most out of their relationship.

The Poodle comes in at number two!
The second most intelligent dog might surprise a lot of people. Not only for the fact that they are highly intelligent, but also because they are one of the easiest dogs to train. They love people, and because of this they don’t like to be left alone. They are very protective and can become quite vicious if anybody encroaches upon their property or territory.

And the number one all-time most intelligent dog of all is the Border Collie!
The Border Collie is another dog that is often seen winning competitions. They are highly intelligent, but along with that intelligence comes the need for them to be stimulated regularly.
They are happiest when they are working or performing in competitions or dog trials. So there you go, if you have a Border Collie, you know you have the most intelligent dog in the world, provided of course, that you’ve trained it well.
