A majority of people look at a dog and ask if it is good with kids. They look at breeds and the like but more often than not the question isn’t if the dog is good with kids but if the children are good with dogs. Nearly any dog that's properly raised, trained and socialized will be good with kids. For instance most people say that Dachshunds aren’t good with children yet my grandparents have always had Doxies and they’ve never harmed us when we were kids. Of course we were taught from an early age how to respect and handle animal and I think that's a very important part of the solution to the dog/child question.

Some of the breeds that are naturally good with children or can be socialized and trained to be good are to be listed. These breeds are of moderate activity level, are usually simple to train, are moderately playful and are affectionate. The ideal I shall put higher on the list but they all should be good if properly raised, trained and socialized and if the children are not rough or abusive.

Golden Retriever

Eskimo Dogs (Toy, Mini or Standard)

Canaan Dog

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Polish Lowland Sheepdog

Standard Poodle

Shetland Sheepdog

American Cocker Spaniel

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Collie

Curly Coated Retriever

Doberman Pinscher

English Cocker Spaniel

English Setter

English Springer Spaniel

Field Spaniel

Flat Coated Retriever

Labrador Retriever

Gordon Setter

Komondor

Pointer

Portuguese Water Dog

There are of course more and there should be a dog for every family that should wish to own one but this is a good list to start with. Also keep in mind that even if a breed is known for being good with kids individual results may vary so make sure the dog’s temperament is suitable.
