When evaluating a dog for a family, it’s important to choosea breed carefully. Particularly nervous or highly strung breeds wouldn’t be great around children, particularly younger kids. In their desire to play with this adorable new addition to the household, they may frighten or irritate the dog, which could lead to defensive behaviour like nipping or biting your children.

Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers make great family dogs. They love attention, and are extremely friendly. They are good with children, and can be quite goofy and playful. Some can be aggressive, but this is usually a problem with poor breeding. It tends to affect those with a reddish colored coat more, and is often associated with an underactive thyroid. So, it’s important to get a dog from a good breeder whose first priority is the temperament of the dog.

Labrador Retriever

Labrador retrievers are very athletic dogs, so they need quite a bit of exercise. This is especially true of black labradors (my sister can testify to that!). But they are happy dogs, very affectionate with both adults and children, and gentle. They love water. My sister’s dog chewed the hose one day when they were away and the people looking after her did not give her the daily play with the hose she so loved.

English Cocker Spaniel

English cocker spaniels are intelligent, affectionate, and happy dogs. They love playing with children, and so make good family pets. They have a very gentle nature.

Old English Sheepdog

Old English sheepdogs are Largedogs. They are very affectionate, and get along well with children – as long as they’re not teased or treated roughly (or with rough play). So, if you have young children, this would not be a suitable breed. Older children would probably be fine, however.

When training Old English sheepdogs, it’s important not to be overbearing, as this can cause these dogs to be timid, or respond aggressively based on fear. These dogs need company, and a reasonable amount of space.

Other good choices for a family dog include pugs, beagles, basset hounds, and Brittany spaniels.

Whatever type of dog you choose, it’s important to understand that buying a puppy will require a lot of time in training, particularly with regards house training. Not only does the puppy need a lot of affection, attention, and guidance, but the kids will also need to be taught how to interact with your puppy so that they don’t accidentally hurt them. If you’ve young children, or toddlers, and your hands are full with them, it may besuperior to buy an older dog who has already been trained.

Choosing the right family dog can be a difficult decision. There are several factors to take into consideration, and different types of dogs may be appropriate for different families. First example, if your household includes children, you may want a different breed of dog than if your family includes only adults. This article contains a few tips that can help you get started.

Whether you buy your dog from a pet store or chooseto adopt him or her from an animal shelter, you will most likely be able toselect among several different breeds, gender, and maybe even the age of the dog. No matter where you decide to look, there are a few factors you should consider.

<img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/17/20184422_eae7fe3ded_m.jpg" alt="Vintage family, dog, home, and car"">

The first is that you are acquiring a family pet, not just a companion. This means that the dog youselect will need to get along with the entire family. That is why you should choosea breed that is suitable for people of all ages and with different personalities. If you don’t have children, but are considering starting a family, you will want to make sure the breed youselect will work well with Littleones, especially babies.

While someMore massive dogs are okay around children, some are thought to become more violent more easily, so probably wouldn’t be the right type of dog to be around small children. If your dog tends to be ill-tempered, you might need to considerthis before having children, or be willing to find the dog a new home when the children arrive. Also, some breeds of dog tend to be a bit nervous around children, so this is something you’ll definitely wantto take into account if you already have kids and are thinking about getting a dog.

Space can also prove to be an issue. For example, if you do not have much of a back yard, or do not have a yard at all, you wouldn’t want to get a dog that would stay outside most of the time. There are several reasons for this, the first of which is that dog wouldn’t have a lot of room to run and play. This is just as essential for dogs as it is for humans, as good exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle and for dogs, can help to promote good behavior. Think about the size of your home before actually choosing a dog. If the dog will have ample room to run around and be comfortable, and is well-tempered, it will most likely be a good choice for a family dog.
