Dogs for people with allergies

While there is still no such thing as an hypoallergenic dog, there are some dog breeds that may be lessapt to trigger those severe bouts of sneezing and itchy eyes. Acknowledging such breed may really make a great difference in those individuals that would really love to own a dog but the only sight of one, make their nose itchy.

First of all, one must recognize what it is in a dog that causes annoying allergy attacks. If you thought it was the dog itself or its hair you’re wrong. The real culprit lies in the dog’s dander which consists of a dog’s dry skin cells that will fall of the dog and become airborne having allergic people look for a Kleenex.

So the ultimate bad news is that basically all dogs have skin, and therefore, all dogs have dander but the good news is that some dog breeds will be less propense to produce aMassiveamount of dander. Because a pet’s dander is mostly attached to a pet’s hair, a non shedding coat will be generally lessprone toproduce dander.

The “American Kennel Club came up with a great list of dogs that seem to create less severe allergy responses in allergic dog owners. It consists of 11 dog breeds:

The (almost) hairless Chinese crested

The Xoloitzcuintli

The Bichon Frise’

The Bedlington Terrier

The Kerry Blue Terrier

The soft coated Wheaten Terrier

The Maltese

Poodles in general

Schnauzers in general

The Portuguese Water dog

The Irish Water Spaniel

Of course, potential owners must do good research Continue reading

With 10% of the US population allergic to animals, finding the “perfect” dog with no shedding which is allergen free is a quest. Contrary to what many people believe, it is not a dog’s hair that causes allergies, but dander, saliva and urine. These allergens are light and sticky and can can drift about your home with ease. The one saving grace is that all allergens are not created equally. Although you may be allergic to one species of dogs, you may be fine around another.

Whether your dog has long hair, is bald or has short hair, allergens exist. Any dog with fur will shed a little. Hair may increase your allergic reaction because if there’s a lot of loss of fur, all the dander sticking to it may create a reaction in you.

Breeds like poodles, airedales and schanuzers only shed their skin (dander) about every 21 days as opposed to dogs such as cocker spaniels, German Shepards, and Irish setters which shed skin every three to four days. When you hear animals touted as “hypoallergenic” it actually means that your allergic reaction will be reduced, not go away all together.

Some common “hypoallergenic breeds” are poodles, labradoodles, Bichon Frise, Havenese, Miniature Schnauzers, Kerry Blue Terriers, Soft Coated Western Terrier, Maltese, Portuguese Water Dogs, Italian Greyhound, Basenji, Chinese Crested, Chihuahuas, and Mexican Hairless Dogs. If you like one of these breeds and suffer from allergies spend some time with the different dogs. Continue reading
