Pets: Small dog breeds – Part 1

Choosing a small dog is always a minefield- temperament, size, short or long hair- there are so many options and choices. I have recently come across a breed called a “Moodle” a mix between a Maltese and a poodle- and was impressed by this particular puppy’s temperament, size and behavior.

The Maltese breed has traditionally been a “lap dog” and have a reputation for being yappy and skittish- but combined with the Poodle breed, it seems to strike a good balance between the Maltese energy, and poodle size. The breed is intelligent- easy to train- meaning that it is suitable for indoors and outdoors- and with the long hair can be styled to suit your tastes.

One problem with Maltese and poodle breeds is that they do need more care because of their longer hair- they need to be bathed and brushed regularly to prevent mats or “dags” (like a dread lock) from forming. Also, these dogs need to have their nails clipped regularly- not simple unless the dog is well trained. A final problem with these dogs is that they get brown “sleep” from the corners of their eyes that needs to be cleaned regularly. All these problems can be rectified by taking the dog to a groomer once a fortnight- but its best to know what you’re up for before you buy…

The Moodle breed is great for all ages- I would definitelyadvocateone- especially for inner city people or people looking for companionship.
