Dog breed: Siberian husky

Is there anybody who doesn’t admire the handsome, dignified Siberian Husky? These tough, graceful dogs were developed by the native Chukchi in north-eastern Siberia. Temperatures here could reach well below 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. The Chukchi tribe needed a medium-sized dog that could tolerate the conditions, be used to herd reindeer and also to pull sleds loaded with seal meat, skin and blubber from the Arctic coast back to the Chukchi villages. The speed and stamina of these dogs also saw the Chukchi able to flee from the Cossack warriors who were intent on expanding into the territory to trap for furs. For their size, the dogs were extremely strong, capable of pulling light loads at a reasonable speed for long distances. The Chukchi held their dogs in high regard, housing them with the family and allowing the children free access to them.

Large numbers were brought into Alaska in 1909 to compete in the long distance All-Alaska Sweepstakes races. In 1925, they gained fame when a relay of dog teams brought life-saving diphtheria serum from Nenana to Nome, Alaska. AKC recognition came in 1930 and the Siberian Husky Club of America was founded in 1938.

The Siberian Husky is one of the Northern dog breeds, often referred to as Spitz-dogs. Although often confused with the Alaskan Malamute, it is smaller, less heavily built and faster. Breeds developed in the northern climates share characteristics of being double-coated and having luxuriant tails which curl over and protect their noses when sleeping. The Siberian Husky is a domesticated pure bred dog and, while they may sometimes be used to depict wolves in movies, they’re not wolves. They do not bark much but tend to whine, howl and vocalise, singing along with sirens, etc. He has a strong pack orientation and, as a group, they may howl rather frequently.

Siberian Huskies range in height from 20 to 23 inches and weigh from 35 to 60 pounds. They should not appear excessively weighty or too heavily boned. The overall impression should be one of balance and grace.

The Siberian Husky is slightly longer than high. The topline is level from withers to croup and of medium length. The back is strong with the tail set on just below the level of the topline and carried in a sickle shape when the dog is alert. The tail hair is much the same length all over giving the appearance of a round brush. He should have a deep chest, well sprung ribs and give the impression of great endurance.
