BACKGROUND

The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, dating back to the third century B.C., and is also the smallest of native dog breeds originating from Japan. They are agile and have sharp senses, which make the Shiba excellent watchdogs.

THE LOOK

Shiba males are about 15-16 inches tall at the withers, while females are about 13-15 inches high. Males usually weigh about 22-24 pounds, and females are approximately 17-18 pounds. The two genders are simple to differentiate, do to the males’ masculine and females’ feminine looks.

The Shiba Inu’s eyes slant upward and are dark brown in color, with black eye rims. Ears are set apart and tilt forward, and are triangular. The muzzle in round with a straight bridge. The muzzle is about 40% of the head length.

The body is compact, and has a double coat, the outer coat being straight and usually coarse, with a soft undercoat which are both shed seasonally in small quantities. The Shiba can be black and tan, red, cream, pinto red with black tipped hairs (sesame) with undercoats in grey, buff, or cream. However, Shibas in cream or pinto are not granted in the show rings as the “urajiro” markings can’t be seen, which are usually a white pattern on the Shiba’s underside.

THE ALMOST-EXTINCTION

These dogs almost completely disappeared after WWII despite efforts to preserve them in Japan in 1936 when the breed was declared a natural monument. The present day breed was bred from the three surviving bloodlines: San’in, Mino, and Shinsu.

THE ATTITUDE

Because of the Shiba Inu’s intelligence, they can learn to housebreak themselves, and are quick learners. They will usually try to clean themselves by licking their legs and paws, and avoid walking in dirt or puddles. They are fastidious, so when unhappy or annoyed, they will produce their signature “Shiba scream” which is a loud and high-pitched shriek. They can also make similar sounds when extremely happy, such as seeing a favored person after long periods of absence.

Although Shiba’s will make great companions, they’ll chase anything that runs away most of the time because of their hunting drive which is due to the fact that Shibas were bred to hunt small animals such as rabbits. Shibas that are too aggressive or shy will be penalized severely in the show ring.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Shibas are susceptible to food allergies, althoughnot overwhelmingly so. Other health conditions that are known to affect the Shiba Inu are eye diseases (cataracts), hip dysplasia, luxating patella, and glaucina. Epilepsy is also starting to form in some bloodlines. The average life expectancy rate is about 12-15 years.

In conclusion, the Shiba Inu is an intelligent and small breed that is spirited and confident, that are affectionate once you gain their respect. They need to be exercised regularly, but they adapt well. Although they are fastidious, they’ll be comfortable with a loving owner. Excellent guard dogs and friends, the Shiba Inu is a great choice for those that are dedicated to taking care of their dogs.
