Dog breed: Beagle

Ask not what a beagle can do for you but what you can do for your beagle.

If I compared a Beagle with a car I’d see them as a family friendly, mid range size very standard runabout, which is relatively maintenance free and reasonably priced so long as you get the warranty card filled out and really keep an eye on the fuel it’s consuming!

Let’s equate the negative aspects of a Beagle with crash testing.

It’s pretty scary.

The Beagle doesn’t perform well in the crash test.

Do your own research here do not just take my word for it. Understand these negatives then really prepare for them to ensure you get what you want.

The Negatives

Beagles are gluttons! Is that an endearing trait for a dog, I do not think so.

They would eat until they exploded if you let them.

There is no concept of stop when it comes to food.

I have seen them continuously snatch food, scale tall countertops and I am convinced they would learn to fly if they could if that meant access to more food.

They aretotally food obsessed and this isn’t to be under-estimated.

They beg incessantly! you guessed it for more food.

A Beagle will become naughty if it’s left without attention for too long. You may well come home to find your home trashed simply because the dog was bored and chose to amuse itself.

Fencing

Beagles will quite happily run away if you don’t adequately fence them.

This will be a problem when you do not have food with you and the dog doesn’t respect your foodless authority.

Noise DB

They howl not just bark but howl.

Some Beagles will howl more than others.

Regular exercise, amusement and general stimulation will help minimise this.

Positives

Very loyal

Quite visuallyentertaining with white tri-colour markings

They are reasonably low maintenance as they have a short haired coat.

They have an average lifespan of about 12 13 years

Health wise the pedigree Beagle is generally a very healthy dog.

There are occasion problems like epilepsy within the breed but they’re fairly rare.

They can suffer from ear problems as they’re so floppy…. and maybe get in the way of food.

By far the biggest risk factor to it’s health is obesity.beagle

What are they like?

Beagles are the politician of the dog world they’re not really interested unless there is something in it for them. They aren’t overly respectful, in fact they can be pretty difficult as they have a kind of take it or leave it attitude. Odds are you’ll get more respect and maybe more interest with a friendly bribe food treat

Why have I listed this as a positive? Because like most politicians they are quite predictable! Very much like Politicians Beagles look trust worthy, and when they plead for more so convincingly with large brown eyes it’s hard to believe they can do any wrong. Sucker!

Things to watch out for

Whilst the Beagle is considered a very family friendly dog!

When your child has food in it’s hands this breed of dog is primarily motivated by it’s instinct for food. The dog will attempt to take the food every time until the child is able to assert it’s pecking order or dominance over theTiny beastie.

Things to do

Buy dog toys I’d recommend, difficult food related time consuming ones.

The overview

Beagle dogs are relatively in-offensive, family loving, good with kids, medium sized beasties which appear to love but actually, really they just love the food your eating.

Plan ahead, know the downsides and Considerthe choice carefully, train the dogs and you can have an excellent pet.
