Obesity in dogs is caused by two things: overeating & not enough exercise. It’s really that simple. Overeating comes from feeding our dog out of guilt. We didn’t have enough time to take them for a walk today, so here’s a huge fat treat. The good news is obesity is a reversible condition.

If your dog is grossly obese, consult with your vet on a treatment plan that can be monitored. If your dog just has some extra pounds, you can help your friend lose the pounds. Your first step is to monitor your dog’s intake. Their diet should consist of a dog food that’s specific for weight loss. Consult your vet for recommendations. Follow the feeding the directions on the label. Free feeding is a daily buffet for your dog & they won’t monitor their intake.

Your next step is to gradually increase your dog’s activity level. This doesn’t mean a 20 mile run if your dog hasn’t left the sofa in years. Use common sense andThink about how it would be for you to startexercising if you’ve been a couch potato. Slow daily walks can be gradually increased as your dog becomes fitter.

We think we’re doing our dog a favor by giving them the table scraps & everything they beg for. The reality is we’re making the quality of life for them much worse. Following some simple steps like monitoring their food intake & increasing their activity level is all it takes to drop those unwanted & unhealthy pounds.

The first time I ever heard about PWD’s was when I met Cocoa. That was about six years ago, my daughter brought him over to our house by the Bay in Mill Valley Ca. I fell in love with him instantly, and was always happy to house sit him when his family had to travel. A year later, my Doctor prescribed a Dog for my high blood pressure to get me out more away from mypersonal and robots. Well, my wife said “been there done that” and we didn’t get a dog until my daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer right before her wedding in southern France. She demanded that we get a dog upon return as that would be something to look forward to, rather than dwell on the negative of chemotherapy and the cancer. My wife switched her outlook and agreed, and there would be no doubt about the type of dog to get, it would be Cocoa’s breed, a portuguese water dog.
By the time she was done with the chemo, about 3 months after the wedding, Goji arrived from a breeder. It wasn’t long before we saw the challenges a pwd puppy presents, and it was no normal docile family dog. It was a demanding human like breed with real emotions and high intelligence. He is super social, and I never imagined that a dog could stir so much excitement on anybody he met, be them dog lovers or not. Update on my daughter, there has been no signs of cancer since, it’s been over 4 years. It was caught very early, and surgery was minimal.
This breed needs much socialization, and needs to be around humans. It seems they best get along with other PWD’s, and we would switch often with Cocoa’s family every few days. They had constant play dates.
Now Goji is 4 years old. Cocoa’s family had to suddenly move to Singapore from Tiburon California. We were asked to take care of Cocoa while they arranged his migration to Singapore. He would need to be in quarantine possibly 30 days there!
It took over two months for them to get the kennel reservation and necessary papers, and after our move to Terra Linda, San Rafael, California Cocoa departed for Singapore. He is a good traveler, has been in planes, and always loved to be in my van. Goji, on the other hand, shakes and quivers in the car, and is a bad traveler, hates boats more than anything, who knows why? there is no reason from this incarnation.
Cocoa’s 16 hour plane trip was successful. Cocoa will only have a ten day quarantine because the USA vets supplied the necessary shots and paperwork, the family has visited him while incarcerated, and all will be fine. But we miss Cocoa a lot, and though Goji can’t say it, he must miss him a lot too. It was extraordinary to see the two together, with the same gestures, playful attitude, habits, likes and dislikes.

Great care should be taken when bathing you dog; his ears must be protected from the water with Largecotton wool balls. If water enters the ear canals he may get an ear infection. The symptoms of an ear infection are a shaking of his head and a constant discharge from his ears.

How often you bath your dog depends on his breed. If long haired breeds are bathed too often their skin and coat won’t protect the dog as well as they should. However sometimes it is unavoidable if the dog has messed its self due to illness then it would be necessary for the sake of hygiene.

Ensure that bath products used stipulate that they are suitable for dogs. Human shampoo and soap isn’t suitable to use on your dog. Human shampoo and soap could irritate the skin of your dog. If you use a new product be sure and read the label.

Dogs love water if you take him out to where there’s river or stream let him have a swim in it. Ensure that you are organized with the lease to hand and a towel. When bathing your dog organize yourself before hand and make sure you’ve everything you need within reach.

As with humans if you use conditioner on your dog at bath time his coat will be easier to comb.

If you don’t clean your dogs ears properly you could damage them as they’re very delicate. In order to clean your dogs ears properly you need to ;-

Use cotton wool balls in his ears at bath time to prevent water getting in his ears and causing an infection.

Every four weeks clean your dogs ears with a cotton swab, your vet may make asuggestion as to a mild cleansing agent but you could use mineral oil. Take the swab and gently clean both the inner and outer parts of the dogs ear but being careful not to push any wax into the ear, leave a Littlewax in the ear as this will protect the ear canals.

Clean under the ear flaps and remove any foreign objects that may be stuck in the fur around the ears.

Trim any long hair around his ears as this can cause an infection. The air circulation will be improved by trimming the hair.

Call your vet if necessary if you dog has any wounds, cuts or scratches to his ear flaps that have become infected.

Clipping your dog

Clipping a dog is an art. Skin disease can be caused by dirt accumulation in a dog’s coat. Clipping of a dogs coat or nails must be done very carefully so as not to cause any injuries.

Clipping can expose any skin complaint or parasite that your dog may have. Pet Health Parlors are available for the clipping of your dogs coat and nails. If you you’re your dog yourself take care not to cut his coat too short in the winter, also you may cause your dog injury which could cause bleeding if you clip his coat and nails too short.

If you do your own clipping sharp good quality clipping instruments are available from most pet shops remember it isn’t advisable to clip you dog if he is ill.

Portuguese Water Dogs have short hair that does not shed and is considered a working dog, meaning that it is a breed that needs to stay busy. This breed is considered a hypoallergenic dog. Traditionally used to aid in fishing expeditions, the Portuguese Water Dog is now kept as a house pet. While this breed is not as common as other breeds, if you want to dog that is hypoallergenic, lively, and enjoys companionship, then this breed may be the one for you.

Since the Portuguese Water Dog is not bred as often as other breeds of hypoallergenic dog, you will have to search for a breeder online, in the newspaper, or by calling breeders in your area until you find one. Generally happy dogs, the PWD needs to stay busy or it will get bored. You should have plenty of toys for it to play with and you may wantto take into account crate training when you’re not at home. This means that the dog will stay in a crate when you go out so it does not destroy your home. When the PWD gets bored or lonely, it will chew on anything it finds.

Crate training should beginright after you bring the dog home. By placing a blanket, toys and water into the crate, you’ll make the dog comfortable while you’re away. You should not use the crate when punishing the dog or it will not want to go in it when you leave for the day. After training the dog, you will have to keep up the routine. This will give the dog structure and will also salvage your possessions. Keeping the dog in a crate when you are not at home will also reduce allergens.

Portuguese Water Dogs need to be groomed every two months or so. There are two patterns that most groomers follow, the retriever cut and the lion cut. The retriever cut means that the hair is cut evenly on the body. The lion cut leaves that front half of the dog’s body covered with hair, while hair on the hind legs is cut short. You should take the dog to have his hair groomed if you are not comfortable slicing it yourself.

If you’re considering buying a PWD, you should be prepared to have constant companionship. These breeds need to be walked and they need to be entertained throughout the day. If you need to travel on vacation or for work, you should board the dog so it won’t be lonely. Portuguese Water Dogs typically live between twelve and fifteen years.

Portuguese Water Dogs are easy going and get along with children and most adults. If you’re looking for a breed that does not shed and will fit in with your family, then the PWD is the breed for you. While most Portuguese Water Dogs are black, some are white or a mix of both. Their hair is curly or wavy and similar to that of the standard poodle.
