“Obesity is a massive problem in pets, just as it is with people, and exercising helps keep the dog’s weight down,” Nelson said. “Dogs also need an outlet to relieve their energy or else they may develop destructive behavior. Your dog is going to be happier and more content if it receives adequate exercise.

“Exercising with your pet also promotes the human-animal bond,” she said. “People like dogs because of their unconditional love, and dogs are going to be very pleased to have their owners do something with them.”

Nelson said exercise is important, but dogs differ in the amount and types of exercise they should be doing to maintain good health. A blanket recommendationfor exercise time amounts cannot be given as exercise needs vary vastly between individuals, and factors such as age, breed, weather and general health all influence the amounts of exercise your dog will need. Nelson stated to Considerthese guidelines:

• In general,More massiveand working dogs have higher energy needs, and smaller/toy breeds need less exercise.
• Ideally, dogs should get out twice daily for exercise. Times may vary from 15-60 minutes, depending on your individual pet.
• Turning the dog loose in the backyard isn’t enough — aerobic exercise should be continuous with few breaks. Most dogs are content to lie in the sun and only get up for short periods of activity. If the dog has another dog it can run around with outside, that could be sufficient if they spend long periods of continuous play, but don’t rely upon that in most circumstances.

Nelson stated there are many generalities when it comes to exercising with dogs, but they are just generalities. For example, though many small dogs prefer lighter activities, Jack Russell terriers tend to be very high-energy pets. Here are some generalities for activities to do with your dog depending on its needs and interests:

• Medium andBigdogs typically make betterlong-distance running partners. If your dog can run longer than you’re able, you may want to Think about biking while having your dog run beside you on leash. Pay careful attention to safety if you choose this option. Smaller dogs are bettersuited for shorter distance running or walking.
• While many dogs like catching flying discs, be careful to keep the throws low to avoid injury to joints from higher leaps. • Swimming is a non-joint stressing exercise for dogs, just as it is for people. It is a great option during the hot summer months when heat exhaustion is a concern. Retrievers are at the top of the pack for this activity.
• Dogs also need mental exercise. Breeds such as border collies need a lot of mental stimulation to keep them happy. Activities to Think about are searching for hidden items, laser light chasing or completing special tasks.

According to Nelson, health concerns to be aware of when exercising with your dog include:

• All dogs are at risk for overheating. When it’s hot, the heat, especially combined with humidity, makes it easier for the dog to succumb to heat exhaustion. Be especially cautious with dogs with short noses, like bulldogs and Boston terriers, because they can’t cool themselves as effectively as other dogs due to the conformation of their noses. Dark-haired and long-coated dogs also are at higher risk. If during exercise your dog starts acting woozy, gets a dark red-colored tongue or gets thick ropy saliva, you should stop immediately and get it in a shaded area. Offer water and hose it down with cool water if necessary. For more severely effected dogs, wet them down with water and then take them to a veterinarian immediately.
• Give your dog frequent water breaks while exercising, especially if it is hot out. Limit exercise times to early morning and later in the evenings, and be cognizant of daytime temperatures and humidity.
• Conversely, cold weather also poses special risks to your pet. Frostbite to the feet, nose and ears is possible along with irritation to the feet by ice melts. Do not grant your pet to drink from puddles in the street as they may be contaminated with antifreeze. Short-coated and smaller breed dogs may require a jacket for extra warmth.
• Young dogs, particularlyHuge breed growing puppies, shouldn’t go on long runs until around 12-15 months of age. Up to that time their bones are still growing and elongating. Prolonged, pounding exercise on hard surfaces can potentially cause early damage to their joints.
• Don’t feed your dog right before or right after intense exercise. This may predispose the dog’s stomach to bloat or twist, especially for Largebreed or deep-chested dogs. A general rule of thumb is to not feed dogs an hour before or after exercising.

The down command can be taught at any stage in your dog’s training. This command is also called the drop command. Some trainers prefer to use the term drop as it is lessapt to be used in general conversation and cause confusion for your dog. The word you choosedoesn’t matter as long as you remain consistent.

The down exercise doesn’t require a lot of room or time. You could even do it during ad breaks on television. There are a number of methods that can be used and all will work equally well with a puppy or adult dog.

It is easiest to instruct your dog from the “sit position as his rear end is already on the ground. Get down on your knees beside your dog and pat the ground directly under his nose as you command him to “Drop”. Many dogs will lie down simply to see what you’re doing because they are curious.

If your dog does not lie down in response to you patting the ground, place your left hand on his shoulders and take his front legs in your right hand. Say “Drop” and lift both front legs as you gently push his shoulders down.

As soon as he is lying down praise him. Keep him there for about five seconds byrelaxing your left hand gently on his shoulders then state “Go free,” and release him.

This method is simple to use on all puppies no matter what their size but for aBigbreed adult dog you may need to pass your arm under their front legs to lift as you give the drop command.

Some trainers will state “Drop” every time they see their dog about to lie down naturally. To get the best results from this method the command needs to be spoken at least nine out of every ten times your dog lies down.

If you’ve a lot of time to spend with your dog this method works well. The more consistent you’re the less time it will take for the dog to make a connection between the word and the action.

Other trainers may advocatebowling your dog over or stamping quickly unpleasant for the dog and obtain the response through fear. A dog who obeys because he wants to please you is always more reliable than one who responds because he’s afraid.

The drop command is useful if you want your dog to remain in one place for an extended period of time. It is more comfortable for him than the sit position and will grant you both to relax while you chat with friends or stop at an outdoor cafe for a break.

As with all training the key to success is quiet persistence combined with praise to reinforce the behaviour you require.

The way I see it all canine behaviorwhether learned or instinctive, nor-mal or abnormalis done in an attempt to reduce or release some kind of internal tension. When you consider it, even breathing is a matter of tension and release. When too much tension builds up inside a dog’s system, that’s when we tend to see abnormal behaviors.

The normal way for a dog to reduce tension is through some activity related to the prey drive. Looking at the wolf model, we can see that wolves are an anomaly in the natural world. They’re one of only three types of mammals that routinely hunt animals that areMore massiveand more hazardous than them- selves: CANINES hunt bison, elk, and moose, while ORCAS and other species of dolphin hunt whales. The third mammal in this category is HOMO SAPIENS. All three species originally huntedBigprey by working cooperatively, though humans later developed weapons, so we no longer need to hunt in groups. (Someone ought to tell that to Dick Cheney.)

The bottom line is that a wolf’s social instincts are based on their need to huntMassiveprey. For instance, wolves who settle near a dump don’t really form packs. They have looser social arrangements. It also turns out that coyoteswhom it was thought for years Did notform packsactually do, but only when they need to huntMassiveprey.

Bison, elk, moose, etc. have horns and hooves. Dog training begins virtually at birth. Dogs that are handled and petted by humans regularly during the first eight weeks of life are generally much more amenable to being trained and living in human households. Ideally, puppies should be placed in their permanent homes between about 8 and 10 weeks of age. In some places it is against the law to take puppies away from their mothers before the age of 8 weeks. Before this age, puppies are still learning tremendous amounts of socialization skills from their mother. Puppies are innately more fearful of new things during the period from 10 to 12 weeks, which makes it harder for them to adapt to a new home.

Puppies canstart learning tricks and commands as early as 8 to 12 weeks of age; the only limitations are the pup’s stamina, concentration, and physical coordination. It is much easier to live with young dogs that have already learned basic commands such as sit. Waiting until the puppy is much older andBigger and has already learned bad habits makes the training much more difficult.

There are some professional trainers who disagree with this idea, particularly those who train working dogs, detection dogs, police dogs, etc. They feel that obedience work shouldn’tbegin until the dog is at least a year old, or after the prey drive has fully developed. These trainers also take the position that spaying and neutering is harmful to the training process, again because of its negative impact on the dog’s prey drive.

This bond begins in training through role change and creating harmony within the pack relationship. Many paths lead to achieving role change and levels of harmony through various interactions, methods and devices. Although the importance of obtaining a dog with good temperment and drive cannot be diminished often too much burden and blame is placed onto the dog when issues appear during the training process.

Harmony between handler and dog, within the context of pack, is what propels the teams true potential forward. To comprehend pack is to know that true harmony can only be achieved with seeing everything which is occuring within the pack relationship.

Ultimately when true harmony is taking place between handler and dog, within the context of pack and the roles, everyone wins.

Miscellaneous Class Breeds

The Miscellaneous Class is intended as an interim stage. Under current policy, dogs would become eligible for registration at the time that the breed is brought into the Miscellaneous Class. After a limited time in the Miscellaneous Class a date would be set, at which time the breed would become eligible to compete in a variety group at all-breed dog shows.

Foundation Stock Service Breeds

The Foundation Stock Service (FSS); was created by the American Kennel Club to answer the needs of today’s rare breed fanciers. The Foundation Stock Service is an optional record keeping service for all purebred breeds not currently registrable with the American Kennel Club.
