Dogs. Dogs with personality. I’ve known dogs with a lot of personality. I knew an Eskimo Dog named Ijinguk or Crazy Eyes. He was a medium sized dog, a Littlehusky and a scrapper. Eskimo Dogs are working dogs. They are also a pack animal as in pack of wolves. They sort out their own hierarchy. Their is an alpha male, usually with two subordinates of high rank. This kind of structure makes itvery hard to challenge the alpha male, althoughone of the high ranking subordinates can and do challenge the alpha male. Usually these challenges are nothing more than skirmishes for food, space, or the right to mate.

Crazy Eyes wasn’t a massive dog, more of the mid size dog, but he’d heart. He was the top enforcer and didn’t like anybody to crowd him. Not even the alpha male. He eventually became an alpha male, a place that was just to his liking.

Siuluk (Bad ears) was a gluttonous dog. I personally did not know him, but uncle used to talk about that dog as though he was talking about one of his friends. Bad Ears was a scrawny dog. He was low ranking, with a large appetite and personality. He lived to eat and when feeding time came, he would wolf down his food. Even if it was frozen. He ate so fast that the meat Did nothave time to properly thaw and the cold meat would hurt his stomach. He would cry in pain, but even as he cried he crock his eyes for another nibble to steal.

Once he spotted a chance for a steal, he would get quiet and go into stalk mode. He position himself right behind his potential victim. Then he wouldstart to close in quietly. Then with a desperate lunge, he would charge for the meat of his desire. Only another dog was already gnawing on it.

Bad Ears usual trick was to come in under his victims legs and grab the meat. The he would dash for it, while his victim was taken by surprise. Bad Ears only made enough distance to give himself a chance togulp down his meal. He never had time for savoring.

Bad Ears would then huddle to the ground andbegin gulping. Within a moment, his victim would arrive and with indignation and a vengeful fight. Even when the victimized dog began to beat on him, Bad Ears paid no heed. His heart was in the gulping. The victimized dog did his best to make Bad Ear give up the meat, but Bad Ears never gave up even a scrap. The victims only recourse was to take it out on Bad Ears, which meant tearing at the ears. Tatter Ears once had a name before his owner decided Bad Ears suited him better.

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3285/3072246388_032e72138e.jpg" alt="Caitlin & Jelly Bean"">

If you suffer from allergies, you are not alone. Even though most people suffer from some type of allergy, whether it is food, plant, or pet, they can usually find a wayto care abouttheir lives, which in many cases, includes having a few pets. Depending on the severity of your allergies, you will be able to bring a dog into your home as long as you take the time to find the breed that’s right for you.

Hypoallergenic dogs are specific breeds that shed less hair and dander than other dogs, and produce fewer allergens in their saliva and urine. You should keep in mind that all breeds carry a certain amount of allergens, but hypoallergenic dogs carry less. Allergens can become stuck in carpets, on walls, and in bedding and clothing. This is why people have allergic reactions to their pets. In order to have pets, these allergens must be removed through frequent house cleaning, designating certain spots in the house for your pets to sleep, and by finding pets that have shorter hair and don’t shed their skin cells as often.

When looking for a hypoallergenic dog, you should research breeds that have short hair, shed their skin cells (dander) every few weeks rather then every few days, and do not product as much saliva. Since allergies can occur at different times during your life, you should spend some time with the breed of dog you’re thinking of adopting. Visiting a dog breeder or a friend who has a dog will give you asuperior idea of which dog to adopt.

You should also Consideryour current living conditions. If you live in a small house or apartment, you may experience more allergy attacks because the dander and hair is confined to a small space. Adopting a small hypoallergenic dog is the ideal way to remedy this problem. If you live in aMore massivehome, you should be able to purchase aMore massivedog. Letting the dog outside to run in the yard or by taking it for frequent walks will also help because your dog will be able to shed outside instead of inside on your carpeting and bedding.

Once you bring your new dog home, you should give it a few weeks for your body to adjust. Your allergies may become worse before they get better, but after a month, you should see a difference. A hypoallergenic dog does not need any special care unless the breeder has specific health advice about the breed you’re buying.

Taking of your home by cleaning often and invest in a quality vacuum that’ll thoroughly clean your carpeting. If possible, you should replace your carpeting with hardwood flooring. This will keep allergens from piling up and causing an allergy attack. Wipe down the walls once a week and try to keep your new pet off your bed. These precautions will help reduce allergy attacks and help you have a fun, loving relationship with your dog for many years to come.

Small dogs have charm and personality. Over the course of time more and more new breeds have been created by selectively breeding dogs with a certain external appearance and certain character traits. Small dog breeds came into our existence for various reasons. Some small dogs, like the dachshunds and Yorkshire terriers performed specific tasks by hunters. Other small dogs like the Pekingese, Shih Tzu and Maltese were created especially as companions for the well-to-do and the noble. Every land in the world has produced its own breed of small dogs. These small dogs as a result of trade became known in countries all over the world.

The Chihuahua comes from Mexico. The Pekingese and Shih Tzu originated in Tibet and China. Many types of terriers were bred in the Scottish Highlands. It is possible that the ancestors of the petit chien lion and of the poodle were from ancient Greece. The Chinese crested hairless dog is a descendant of the Aztec kingdom and China.

In earlier times to own anPriceypurebred dog such as the Pekingese or the Shih Tzu was reserved only for the wealthy and privileged individuals. The situation changed, however, with the French Revolution when privilege based on social class was called into question. The middle class began to own Expensivepedigreed dogs that were easily distinguished from a mutt. The popularity of the purebred dogs began to soar.

Breed standards in every breed describe from head to toe, height, weight, general appearance and character traits. A breed standard specifies how the best representative of each breed should look. Nature does not permit complete uniformity to these breed standards set by “people.” A standard only represents a goal to which breeders are suppose to come as close as possible of creating. Unfortunately, these rigid standards call for things that have created unnecessary health problems and unnatural characteristics for a dog. For example, noses that have been bred to be excessively short hindering the dog’s breathing and can cause pinched nostrils, which can lead to heart problems. Some breed standards call for legs so short that the dogs can no longer walk normally. It is the goal of responsible dog clubs and associations to work against excesses of this kind.

Small dogs differ fromBigdogs only in terms of their size. It does not need to be overly protected. It is untrue that small dogs are more susceptible to disease just because they are small. On the contrary, small dog’s life expectancy is even higher thanMore massivedogs.

One of the added enjoyments of the smaller dogs is dressing them up in cute little dog clothes and accessories. Larger dogs can be dressed up as well, but there is just something extra sweet and cute about the teacup dog clothes, to see a adorable little Yorkie in dog clothes is eye opening, and the Chihuahua dog clothes sometimes are the cutest of all.

When it comes to feeding your small dog it is important to ensure that you’re familiar with the dietarystipulation of your pet, and you’re aware of what to feed him, what not to feed him, and how to ensure that he is receiving a well balanced and nutritious diet. It is important for all dogs to receive the right diet so that they can maintain their health and well being through a variety of vitamins and minerals.

It is also important to monitor the diet of a small dog, as many smaller breeds – particularly indoor dogs that may not get much in the way of exercise – are prone toweight gain, and this can have a negative effect on their health in many ways. Some important factors in relation to providing your small dog with a health diet include:

- Feed your puppy regularly: Unless otherwise advised by your vet or breeder, most small puppies need feeding small portions several times a day. As the puppy grows into adulthood, the portions can be increased and the dog can be fed twice daily.

- Buy high quality food: Although it can be tempting to opt for the cheaper canned and dried foods, you won’t be doing your dog any favours. Cheaper, lower quality canned food and kibble has far fewer nutrients, and therefore deprives your dog of the minerals and vitamins that he needs to maintain good health. Lower quality foods will also leave him hungry because of the lack of nutrients, so he’ll end up eating more of it to feel full, which means that it could end up costing you just as much as higher quality food in the long run.

- Combine canned food with kibble: It is a very good idea to ensure that your dogs diet is partly made up of kibble because this will help to maintain his dental health, and with a number of small dogsapt tooral problems this could prove an invaluable part of the diet. With many high quality ‘complete’ dried foods available for dogs these days, you can provide your dog with a diet that is purely based on dried food rather than canned, as the complete dried formulas will ensure that he gets all the vitamins and nutrients that he needs as well as promoting good dental and general health.

- Monitor portions and treats: When your small dog looks up at you with those beautiful eyes and then looks dolefully down at his empty bowl it can be all too easy to give him more food without thinking twice – despite the fact that he may have eaten just an hour earlier! Many small dogs are prone toweight gain, and therefore you must be careful not to overfeed your dog. Make sure that you provide him with carefully measured portions, and you don’t overdo it when it comes to treats between meals.

- Exercise: you should ensure that you combine your dog’s healthy diet with an effective exercise regime based on the type of small dog that you have. Regular exercise, even if it is just gentle exercise such as some playtime in the garden, will help to keep him fit and healthy.

- Water: You must ensure that your small dog or puppy always has access to fresh water at all times.

There are many different types of small dog breeds, each having their ownvery special characteristics and traits. Each dog, of course, is avery special individual, but generally most dogs of a given breed have more similarities than dissimilarities of behavior and personality. Although small dog breeds are often thought of as highly strung and yappy, this needn’t be true at all as long as the dog is cared for correctly, given lots of love and attention, as well as good socialization and training. Small dogs may perhaps not adjust as well to boisterous children and toddlers, but they can do very well with older kids and families. Generally, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less high at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightlyBigger than the female, but the difference is generally small.

It’s extremely simple to love small dogs, and one of their great advantages is that they don’t take up too much room. But there are other, numerous reasons why a small dog is one of the best types of dog you can have in your life. No matter who you are, there’s a type of pet that’s small enough to fit easily into your life, but with a heart large enough to fill your days with joy. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet,Think about any of the small breeds of dogs that you can hold easily and enjoy to the full.

If necessary, a small animal can easily be carried from place to place, and, of course, they are easier to fit in the home as well. When you take your small dog out for a walk you don’t have to be afraid all of the time that he is going to pull you over. If you’ve to travel, a small dog is easier to get in and out of the car, and at night he can snuggle into smaller spaces and still be wonderfully comfortable. All this means, of course, that Littledogs are best for homes that are smaller and more compact in nature, but they’re also perfect for those people withMore massivehomes who do not want to fill all the space up with animals. And when you considerthe very wide range of different small dog breeds to choosefrom – terriers, spaniels, chihuahuas, pomeranians, pugs, dachshunds, etc., etc. – it seems impossible not to find one that’s just right for your needs and preferences.

There are many other small dog breeds available so you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. You need to make sure that any new dog – whether a small one or not – fits in with your family, your living space and your lifestyle. Before making a final decision on the breed you want, make sure that you do some thorough research and speak to at least a couple of breeders to find just the right match for you and your family.

Basic small dog care is much the same as forMore massivedogs, but owners need to make a few adjustments to ideal meet their small dog’s needs. Consider the following daily dog care routines, and how they’re adapted to meet the needs of your pint-sized pup.

Feeding Your Small Dog

Naturally you’re going to feed your dog daily, but the standard-size kibble at the grocery store may be tooBigfor your small dog to eat comfortably. You’ll need to be sure to purchase a kibble designed to fit his smaller mouth (these are simple to find among the premium dog food brands). Canned soft foods are also perfectly suitable for your small dog.

Containing Your Small Dog

All dogs need exercise and a safe place to potty outdoors, and a fenced-in yard provides all the security they need, right? Not necessarily when it comes to small dogs. A fence that adequately holds a Biggerdog may have gapsBigenough for a small dog to fit between or under, allowing him to escape. Fences also can’t provide overhead protection from Largehawks, which sadly have been known to carry small dogs and puppies away. A covered kennel run might bettermeet your small dog’s needs.

Training Your Small Dog

Small dogs aren’t any harder to train than Largedogs, yet the consensus of many pet experts is that many of them end up spoiled. No matter if he fits in a purse or a pocket, your small dog still sees the world in terms of pack behavior, and if you’re not leading the pack, he is. It’s a wise idea to make sure your small dog is thoroughly housetrained, no matter how small and inconsequential the mess might seem when he misses. Dog experts alsorecommendyou make your small dog work for you, to keep him responsive to your rules. Have him sit or do tricks before you give him a tasty treat or even his meal.

Grooming Your Small Dog

Small dog care includes some special grooming needs you’ll need to keep in mind. Small dogs require more frequent nail trimming thanBigger dogs, because they typically spend less time on rough surfaces wearing them down. You’ll also need to brush your small dog’s teeth twice a week if you’re feeding a soft canned food diet.

As you can see, small dog care largely follows the same route as care for any other sized dog. The differences may seem like minor details, but paying attention to them can make a huge impact when it comes to meeting your small dog’s special needs.

Before you and your familybegin looking for a dog, they usually have a good idea about the breed of dog they want. Every type of dog needs the same care, there are distinctions between each of the different sizes that will affect you, your home and your family.
Sometimes,Massivedogs get a bad rap. Even though most of the time we think ofMassivedogs as destructive and full of energy, this is not always the case. In fact, a lot of the Largebreeds, especially the giant ones, are some of the mellowest dogs. Very Largebreeds such as the Newfoundlands, mastiffs, and Saint Bernards can be a handful while theyre babieslike any dog, but once they hit adulthood, they tend to settle down. As for their level of energy, some of these giant dogs are more appropriate for small homes than small and spunky terriers. They are usually satisfied with a walk once a day and maybe a couple of games of fetch. Most of them love to cuddle and are content to hang out by your sofa while you’re watching TV. In fact, they’re want-to-be lap dogs because they love to lay their head on your lap all day.
Still, giant breeds are not always the easiest. Think about bloodhoundsthey always slobber, and they have many needs because they are big. This gets Expensivefast becauseMassivedogs eat a lot of dog food. Also, as they grow, you’ll needBigger accessories, crates, treats, grooming and kenneling, so the price will increase too. These massive dogs are also moreprone tohave health problems. Among common problems are hip dysplasia and joint and arthritic disorders. If aHuge breed is not bred carefully, it can be a liability because they carry a great deal of weight.
Medium to Largedogs have characteristics of their own, as well as some of the disadvantages and advantages ofMassivedogs. Golden retrievers, German shepherds, Border collies, and Labrador retrievers all share similar qualities. They are mostly active, they like running and jumping, fetching, and lots of other dog activities. These are the perfect dogs for someone who enjoys dog sports and a vigorous recreational life. While these dogs vary in energy level and individual temperament, they make good hiking and sporting companions. When they’re aTiny older, they tend to mellow out and become great house dogs.
Small breeds are believed to be the greatest companions. They can fit into any truck and boat, and they can even ride with their owners on most airplanes, if the crate is small enough to fit under the seat. That is why many frequent fliers prefer small dogs. Generally, small dogs are the most convenient of all dogsthey can be picked up and moved any time. At the same time, their small size makes them more vulnerable to people and other animals. A easy step would haveTiny to no effect on a Australian cattle dog, at all, while it could kill a small 4-pound Chihuahua.
Small dogs are usually believed to be excellent for apartment living and ideal companions for the elderly. Usually this is true, but in reality, many of the smaller breeds are just Largedogs in small bodies. Usually, terriers are small, but theyre intelligent and active, and theyre headstrong, and they have strong predatory drives. If you want an simple to raise dog and a sleeper, this is not the right dog for you.
Many small breeds do well in apartments and with seniors. A walk or two per day is good enough for them. A sedentary lifestyle is perfect for the small companion dogs. Thats the environment that theyve been bred for centuries for. Since they are smaller, they will need less room and food bowls will take up less space; and its easier to clean up after them. Also, its lessPriceyto maintain themless food, and less kenneling costs. However, small dogs do have some veterinary problems that theMassivedogs dontfor example, eye problems. Treatment can also be a greater risk, because they’re more sensitive to anesthesia.
For more information please visit www.animalshelter.org
